Halle

Singles – Final: (1) R Federer def. M Youzhny 6-7(5-7) 6-3 6-4

This took a little more than two hours, and there were some scary moments in there for Roger Federer. On the other hand, he was never broken in the entire match. He just has a bad tiebreak…. A bad tiebreak, but a good feeling: This is his first title of 2013. Not that it matters, rankings-wise; he remains #3, and in fact he loses ground to Andy Murray (since Federer was defending finalist points, and Murray was defending nothing, Murray increases his point total more than Federer). But Federer has the Wimbledon title to defend in three weeks, and he could easily fall as low as #5 after that. In addition to the points, this must be a big emotional boost.

The ATP notes that this is title #77 for Federer, matching John McEnroe’s total; they are tied for third on the all-time list.

Poor Mikhail Youzhny — who is now 0-15 against Federer — added a few points, but he has plenty of optional results; it’s the big events where he suffers. It looks as if he will gain only one ranking spot. The good news is, he has enough solid grass results that he will rise into the #17-#24 seeding tier on the Wimbledon seed list, assuming we’ve estimated it right.

Doubles – Final: (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky .def. Bracciali/Erlich 6-2 7-6(7-3)

If only Santiago Gonzalez and Scott Lipsky could do at the big events what they do at the small! They now have four titles in the last 12 months (Newport, Winston-Salem, Oeiras, and Halle). But they’re all 250s. It is interesting that two of them are on grass…. Clearly the talent is there, but the points for titles like this don’t help much. Still, they’re putting a lot of stuff in their trophy cabinets. Jonathan Erlich at least earns his first final in more than a year; his last was at Belgrade 2012. Danielle Bracciali earns his first since Moscow.

Queen’s

Singles – Final: (1) A Murray def. (5) M Cilic 5-7 7-5 6-3

Once again Andy Murray faced a rain delay before the start of his match. So he seemed to be determined to get off to a face start; he broke Marin Cilic in the second game of the match. But then things started to slip — literally; he took a skid on the humid grass. It took him two and a half hours to win — even longer than Roger Federer needed in Halle.

But win he did. Which, as we noted above, means that he increases his lead in the contest for #2. His odds of keeping the #2 spot after Wimbledon look good; indeed, he’s in fairly good shape even after the Olympics come off.

Marin Cilic didn’t defend his title, but he did well enough to retain the #12 ranking — and even to get a little boost from the Wimbledon seeding formula; it appears he’ll be #10. We show the seed list as follows:

1 (ATP: 1) Djokovic: 14558

2 (ATP: 2) Murray: 10993

3 (ATP: 3) Federer: 10338

32 (ATP: 29) Robredo: 1365

Doubles – Final: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (4) Peya/Soares 4-6 7-5 10-3

It was a struggle every match of the way, but somehow the Bryans did it again. What else is there to say about them? Eight titles already this year! — Sydney, Australian Open, Memphis, Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros, Queen’s. That’s a surface sweep, you’ll note — Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Sydney on hardcourt; Memphis indoors; Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros on clay; now Queen’s on grass. They’ve won the biggest tournament so far on every surface! They will clearly be the year-end #1 team; the only question is how many titles — and how many Slams — can they still win? On the evidence, it’s likely to be a lot.

Peya/Soares lose their chance for their third title of the year; it’s their second loss to the Bryans in a final (the other being at Madrid). Still, they came in at #2 in the doubles Race, and this will strengthen their grip on that spot. They haven’t clinched a spot at the year-end Championships, but it looks very likely. A spot in the year-end Top Five looks perfectly possible. They may be the #2 team right now — but they’re #2 behind a team for the record books….

‘s-Hertogenbosch

Singles – First Round: R Haase def. L Mayer 4-6 6-1 6-4

This was an astounding struggle, given the surface and the fact that Robin Haase was playing at home. But everything seems to be a bit of a struggle for Haase right now.

Singles – First Round: D Brands def. (WC) J Huta Galung 6-3 6-2

This wasn’t much opposition, so Daniel Brands would likely have won anyway, but the scoreline is perhaps more evidence of the solid progress Brands has made this year.

Doubles – First Round: Lorenzi/Paire def. Bautista Agut/Gimeno-Traver 6-3 4-6 14-12
