Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) R Federer def. (WC) M Zverev 6-0 6-0

By the looks of things, Tommy Haas had better watch out. Roger Federer has something to prove. This took only 39 minutes, and it is said to be only the second double bagel of Federer’s career, the first being all the way back in 2005.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) R Gasquet def. (8) F Mayer 6-3 7-6(7-4)

It appears this does it. Florian Mayer was the last player who could pass Julien Benneteau to earn the #32 Wimbledon seed. With this, Benneteau clinches and Mayer will have to settle for being the #1 alternate.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) T Haas def. G Monfils 6-7(4-7) 6-3 6-3

It looked for a while as if Tommy Haas wasn’t going to be around for his rematch with Roger Federer. But Gael Monfils seemed to be collapsing at the end of this. So Haas could earn the #12 Wimbledon seed if he wins his next match, and he will keep the #12 ranking if he defends the title here. Unfortunately for Haas, Federer is going to have a huge edge in rest — Haas spent almost three times as long on the court on Friday!

Singles – Quarterfinal: M Youzhny def. (6) P Kohlschreiber 6-3 6-2

It was a lousy day for Germans trying to move up the Wimbledon seed list. Florian Mayer lost his chance to be seeded at all, and Philipp Kohlschreiber lost his chance to be among the Top Sixteen. It appears he’ll be #17. Mikhail Youzhny will be promoted by the formula, but he isn’t going to reach #16, so what he does from now on hardly matters.

Doubles – Semifinal: (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. (2) Knowle/Tecau 6-4 6-4

Horia Tecau really does seem to be struggling since his split with Robert Lindstedt. That team seems to have been greater than the sum of its parts.

Queen’s

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) A Murray def. B Becker 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Entering this week, we wondered a little about just which seeding formula Wimbledon would use, because some schemes might have allowed Roger Federer a shot at the #2 Wimbledon seed if Andy Murray did badly this week; others would have blocked Federer unequivocally. It’s looking less and less as if it matters, because Murray is doing just fine, thank you….

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) M Cilic def. (2) T Berdych 7-5 7-6(7-4)

Interesting that Marin Cilic had an easier time with Tomas Berdych than with Feliciano Lopez the round before. Of course, Berdych doesn’t have much reason to care about points earned here. Lopez did — and Cilic, the defending champion, has his own reasons to care. One more win might let him keep the #12 ranking. And it’s now clear that the Wimbledon formula will promote him at least somewhat — probably #10.

Singles – Quarterfinal: L Hewitt def. (3) J del Potro 6-2 2-6 6-2

And Lleyton Hewitt does it again! This is only a 250 point event, so he still hasn’t moved all that much in the rankings, but it’s pretty clear that he can still beat almost anyone on grass. He’s clearly going to be one of the more significant unseeded threats at Wimbledon. Juan Martin del Potro will stay at #8, where he came in.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) J Tsonga def. D Kudla 6-3 6-2

Funny how the viral illness that took Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out of the doubles didn’t seem to bother him in singles…. Frankly, this is pretty impressive given the battering he took the day before. But he won’t be rising above #7 this week.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (WC) J Murray/Peers 7-6(7-5) 6-7(9-11) 11-9

The Bryans can’t seem to earn an easy win here. On the other hand, they haven’t actually lost, and they haven’t had to spend too long on the court.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Bhupathi/Bopanna def. (5) Fleming/Marray 7-6(7-5) 4-6 10-4

Bhupathi/Bopanna had a bye, then a walkover, so this is fairly important — they needed to win this to earn any points.

Wimbledon Seed Update

For starters, let’s give the list of the 32 players who will have Wimbledon seeds: (assuming, of course, that we calculated everything right): Djokovic, Murray, Federer, Ferrer, Nadal, Berdych, Tsonga, Del Potro, Gasquet, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Haas, Cilic, Tipsarevic, Raonic, Almagro, Simon, Kohlschreiber, Querrey, Monaco, Isner, Janowicz, Anderson, Dolgopolov, Paire, Seppi, Chardy, Robredo, Fognini, Dimitrov, Youzhny, Benneteau. Florian Mayer, Rosol, and Klizan are alternates.

Now let’s look at what the seeding formula will do to that list:

1 (ATP: 1) Djokovic: 14558

2 (ATP: 2) Murray: 10673

3 (ATP: 3) Federer: 10018

4 (ATP: 5) Nadal: 8174

5 (ATP: 4) Ferrer: 7723

6 (ATP: 7) Tsonga: 5646

7 (ATP: 6) Berdych: 4796

8 (ATP: 8) Del Potro: 4575

9 (ATP: 9) Gasquet: 3476

10 (ATP: 13) Cilic: 2921

11 (ATP: 10) Wawrinka: 2866

12 (ATP: 11) Nishikori: 2848

13 (ATP: 12) Haas: 2803

14 (ATP: 14) Tipsarevic: 2690

15 (ATP: 16) Almagro: 2454

16 (ATP: 15) Raonic: 2390

17 (ATP: 18) Kohlschreiber: 2334

18 (ATP: 21) Isner: 2326

19 (ATP: 17) Simon: 2161

20 (ATP: 19) Querrey: 2003

21 (ATP: 29) Youzhny: 1989

22 (ATP: 26) Seppi: 1881

23 (ATP: 20) Monaco: 1844

24 (ATP: 22) Janowicz: 1677

25 (ATP: 23) Anderson: 1628

26 (ATP: 24) Dolgopolov: 1564

27 (ATP: 31) Dimitrov: 1540

28 (ATP: 25) Paire: 1538

29 (ATP: 27) Chardy: 1475

30 (ATP: 30) Fognini: 1416

31 (ATP: 32) Benneteau: 1414

32 (ATP: 28) Robredo: 1365

The only significant change in the Top Eight is that Rafael Nadal takes the #4 seed from David Ferrer.

Things are still interesting in the #9-#12 block. Gasquet, Wawrinka, and Cilic are in. The last spot will go to either Nishikori or Haas. Haas is in a tough situation: He needs a final to keep the #12 spot. Which presumably means beating Roger Federer again.

Note that Mikhail Youzhny and Andreas Seppi rise into the #17-#24 seeding block; they knock out Kevin Anderson and Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The only contest that still matters is the Haas versus Nishikori competition for #12. That will be settled tomorrow, one way or the other.
