Wimbledon Warm-Ups

Halle

Singles – Second Round: (2) R Gasquet def. J Melzer 6-3 6-1

No surprise, these days, but it formally knocks Jurgen Melzer out of the Wimbledon seed hunt. He’ll be no better than #36.

Singles – Second Round: (3) T Haas def. E Gulbis 7-6(7-5) 6-4

One more win and we’ll have a rematch of last year’s Haas/Federer final. Tommy Haas is still only #12 in safe points, and #13 in Wimbledon seed points, but he keeps alive his hopes for the #12 seed in England. For Ernests Gulbis, this means no Wimbledon seed.

Singles – Second Round: (6) P Kohlschreiber def. T Kamke 6-4 6-3

They started the day with the all-German match, and the result was pretty predictable. No points yet for Philipp Kohlschreiber, but he has a real shot at the #16 Wimbledon seed if he can do well here; see the FEature.

Singles – Second Round: (8) Florian Mayer def. Leonardo Mayer 6-2 6-3

One of those fun matches for the commentators. Of course, they could call then “the German” and “the Argentine” — and the German won. Not really surprising, is it?

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Knowle/Tecau def. Melzer/Petzschner walkover (Petzschner/Right Shoulder)

Philipp Petzschner had earlier pulled out of the singles, so this was probably inevitable.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Huey/Inglot def. Bracciali/Erlich 6-1 3-6 10-4

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Kohlschreiber/Youzhny def. Nishikori/Raonic 6-2 7-5

Queen’s

Singles – Second Round: (1) A Murray def. N Mahut 6-3 7-6(7-4)

This was one of four second round matches that had to be carried over from the day before. Fortunately it was already into the second set, so Andy Murray won’t have gotten too tired. In any case, his #2 Wimbledon seed should be safe.

Singles – Second Round: (4) J Tsonga def. E Roger-Vasselin 6-3 6-7(2-7) 6-3

Talk about a tough start to the day for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, given that he had another match to play and that he didn’t even get to start his match the day before….

Singles – Second Round: (Q) F Lopez def. (11) J Benneteau 7-6(7-5) 6-4

Maybe this is why Feliciano Lopez played qualifying: It made a few more points available, so he has a slightly better chance of earning a Wimbledon seed. Playing two matches in one day probably wasn’t part of that plan…. But he did himself a significant favor with this win. Julien Benneteau was #32 in safe points coming in, so he was the player Lopez was most likely to catch. And this means that Benneteau isn’t adding points….

Singles – Third Round: (1) A Murray def. M Matosevic 6-2 6-2

This took less than an hour, so Andy Murray should be quite fresh for the later rounds. Good news for the fans, obviously; it matter less to Murray, given that this is only a 250 point event.

Singles – Third Round: (2) T Berdych def. (16) G Zemlja 6-3 6-4

Grega Zemlja is having a career year, but this probably means no Top Fifty spot.

Singles – Third Round: (3) J del Potro def. (WC) D Evans 6-0 6-3

Juan Martin del Potro won’t be moving this week — he’ll be #8 in both the rankings and the Wimbledon seed list — but he’s certainly getting a nice grass warmup.

Singles – Third Round: (4) J Tsonga def. I Sijsling 7-5 5-7 6-3

A truly impressive day for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga — six sets! But the points remain trivial, and how will he feel tomorrow?

Singles – Third Round: (5) M Cilic def. (Q) F Lopez 4-6 7-6(7-5) 7-5

This was pretty disgusting on Feliciano Lopez’s part. He was up a break and serving for the match in the third set — and never won another game. He had a match point, too. Yes, he must have been tired, but all he had to do was serve it out! Gone are his chances for a Wimbledon seed; the last seed will be either Florian Mayer or Julien Benneteau.

Singles – Third Round: D Kudla def. K de Schepper 6-1 6-3

Lots of wild results around here. Denis Kudla has some pretty good Challenger results, but this is the best ATP result of his year. He’s getting close to the Top Hundred, although he isn’t there yet.

Singles – Third Round: L Hewitt def. (6) S Querrey 5-7 6-3 6-4

And, somehow, Lleyton Hewitt does it again. Sam Querrey will keep his #19 ranking, but his faint shot at the #16 Wimbledon seed is gone.

Singles – Third Round: B Becker def. (7) (WC) A Dolgopolov 7-6(7-5) 7-5

There is probably some sort of moral in here about old grass lovers never dying. First Hewitt, now Benjamin Becker who seems to like grass almost as well as Boris did…. It appears that Alexandr Dolgopolov will not be one of the 24 top Wimbledon seeds.

Doubles – First Round: Garcia-Lopez/Smith def. Malisse/R Ram 6-7(8-10) 6-3 10-5

Doubles – First Round: Paire/Roger-Vasselin def. de Bakker/Sijsling 6-2 7-5

Doubles – Second Round: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Garcia-Lopez/Smith 7-6(7-2) 7-5

The scoreline looks close, but this took only a little over an hour; the Bryans probably weren’t too strongly tested. Maybe it’s just that it was their first match on grass this year.

Doubles – Second Round: (3) Bhupathi/Bopanna def. Mahut/Tsonga walkover (Tsonga/viral infection)

Too bad — this would likely have been a very interesting match. But hard to blame Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for not wanting to play any more!

Doubles – Second Round: (4) Peya/Soares def. Brunstrom/Klaasen 6-2 6-2

Peya/Soares had a fine clay season, but evidently they can handle grass, too. Their chances to qualify for the year-end Championships really do look good.

On the whole, a pretty good day to be a Murray.

Wimbledon Seed Update

This being Wimbledon, a feature about the seeds has to have two parts: One about who is seeded, one about what the seeding formula will do to their seeding.

The first is pretty easy. Right now, the list of seeds is Djokovic, Murray, Federer, Ferrer, Nadal, Berdych, Tsonga, Del Potro, Gasquet, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Haas, Cilic, Tipsarevic, Raonic, Almagro, Simon, Kohlschreiber, Querrey, Monaco, Isner, Janowicz, Anderson, Dolgopolov, Paire, Seppi, Chardy, Robredo, Fognini, Dimitrov, Youzhny, Benneteau. Florian Mayer still has a shot at joining that list (it looks as if a semifinal would do it); Rosol and Klizan are other possible alternates.

But, of course, while only the top 32 players in the field will be seeded, the seeds will be assigned based on the formula. And the formula this year will have more effect than usual. That’s because of the Olympics last year. That adds substantially more points to the system, meaning that the formula has more effect. (At least, if Wimbledon counts the Olympics. For consistency, they shouldn’t, in order to keep the effects of the formula the same from year to year. But can you imagine them not counting a grass event played in London and won by Andy Murray?)

The inclusion of the Olympics matters, too, because if the Olympics were discounted, Roger Federer would likely be looking at the #2 seed. Not now. Our current estimate of the effects of the formula is as follows:

So we have the same Top Three under the formula as we would under the ATP rankings. But note that Rafael Nadal — who was the Wimbledon finalist in 2011 — moves ahead of David Ferrer to earn the #4 seed. Ferrer is stuck at #5. Also in the #5-#8 block, as they would be under the ATP rankings, are Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych, and Juan Martin del Potro.

Things get interesting in the #9-#12 block. Gasquet is safe at #9, and Wawrinka ought to be able to hold his place, too. But Marin Cilic will replace either Kei Nishikori or Tommy Haas in this group. Haas is in a tough situation: He needs a final to keep the #12 spot. Which presumably means beating Roger Federer again.

#13-#16 will include Haas or Nishikori, plus Janko Tipsarevic and Nicolas Almagro, but Milos Raonic could still lose his spot to Philipp Kohlschreiber. Kohlschreiber, like Haas, needs a final — but he is on the opposite side of the Halle draw, so his odds look better.

There was initially quite a contest to see who gets the #24 seed. That is ceasing to be true. Grigor Dimitrov’s loss to Lleyton Hewitt cost him his shot; Benoit Paire and Alexandr Dolgopolov also blew chances. It now looks as if Mikhail Youzhny and Andreas Seppi are safe in that block, replacing Dolgopolov and Kevin Anderson. But it was a near thing.
