Halle

Singles – Second Round: (1) R Federer def. (WC) C Stebe 6-3 6-3

Roger Federer didn’t look particularly strong in the first set of this, but the second was good enough that he was able to finish in just a little over an hour. It won’t make any real difference in terms of points, since Federer cannot earn the #2 Wimbledon seed unless they make a dramatic change in the formula, but it’s a nice transition to grass.

Singles – Second Round: M Youzhny def. (4) K Nishikori 6-1 6-7(4-7) 6-3

Kei Nishikori could not have reached the Top Ten this week, but he could have gotten pretty close. Not now. The best he can hope for is a rather weak #11. And this raises the possibility that he could lose his Top Twelve Wimbledon seed if Tommy Haas and Marin Cilic do well. Mikhail Youzhny seems to be making a run for a Top 24 seed.

Singles – Second Round: G Monfils def. (Q) J Hernych 6-2 6-3

Not too surprising after Gael Monfils beat Milos Raonic in the first round — but his problem remains winning matches at the required events…. There is a report from the BBC that Monfils is out of Wimbledon for personal reasons. Presumably not the sort that distract one during a match….

Singles – Second Round: (WC) M Zverev def. (LL) M Basic 7-6(7-5) 6-3

This probably files under “Well, someone had to win.” Hard to believe Roger Federer is too worried about facing the winner — he may even be happier that Mischa Zverev won, although the German is the higher-ranked of the two, since there is more of a “scouting report” on the Zverev.

Doubles – First Round: Bracciali/Erlich def. Cerretani/Gulbis 6-3 6-2

Doubles – First Round: Kohlschreiber/Youzhny def. (WC) Kern/Struff 6-4 6-2

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) S Gonzalez/Lipsky def. Cabal/Farah 6-3 6-4

Queen’s

It was what Kipling would have called a “blasted Henglish drizzle.” They could have played on clay. Not on grass, though. It was just a little too slippery. Several matches, including Andy Murray’s with Nicolas Mahut, ended up being halted or put off. It will be a long Thursday….

Singles – Second Round: (2) T Berdych def. T de Bakker 6-1 6-4

Pretty trivial for Tomas Berdych, really. He needs a final to add any points, and he will be in the #5-#8 Wimbledon seed block.

Singles – Second Round: (5) M Cilic def. I Dodig 6-3 6-4

Marin Cilic is defending champion, so he isn’t even close to defending his points or his #12 ranking — but everything he does counts toward the Wimbledon formula. Our rough cut is that this moved him ahead of Kei Nishikori in the contest for the #12 Wimbledon seed, and of course Nishikori can’t add more points. So Cilic’s situation is looking fairly good.

Singles – Second Round: (7) (WC) A Dolgopolov def. S Giraldo 6-3 4-6 6-4

Alexandr Dolgopolov is not assured a Top 24 Wimbledon seed — indeed, he probably needs several more wins to earn one. So this may not be the best sign.

Singles – Second Round: L Hewitt def. (10) G Dimitrov 6-4 6-3

When, someday, Lleyton Hewitt eventually, finally retires, the epitaph on his career could read read, “Why grass?” Four Queen’s titles (two of them beating Sampras along the way) and a Wimbledon title are pretty astonishing for a baseliner, even an Australian one. Maybe the answer lies in the big cuts today’s topspinners take at the ball: grass rewards quick feet, fast reflexes, and short swings. Whatever the reason Hewitt beat Grigor Dimitrov pretty routinely, surely one of the best wins of his recent years.

Dimitrov was defending semifinalist points, so this may cost him his Top Thirty spot. There is a very faint chance it could cost him his Wimbledon seed. Certainly it costs him his shot at a Top 24 spot.

Singles – Second Round: B Becker def. (12) L Rosol 7-6(7-2) 7-5

It’s a bit surprising to see Benjamin Becker here rather than in Germany, but it’s no big surprise to see him winning on grass; he has always liked the surface. It looks as if this means no Wimbledon seed for Lukas Rosol, who will be #34 or lower. Could we see a Nadal versus Rosol rematch?

Singles – Second Round: (WC) D Evans def. (13) J Nieminen 6-4 6-7(6-8) 6-4

Maybe Daniel Evans really has learned to keep his concentration on tennis. Of course, this might just be a side effect of Jarkko Nieminen’s dislike of grass. Nieminen loses his very faint chance at a Wimbledon seed.

Singles – Second Round: (16) G Zemlja def. S Stakhovsky 7-5 6-4

This probably won’t be quite enough to do it, but Grega Zemlja is making a real run at the Top Fifty. Too bad he faces Berdych next.

Singles – Second Round: K de Schepper def. (LL) R Bopanna 6-4 6-3

It will tell you how desperate they were for players around here that Rohan Bopanna, who isn’t even ranked any more, got a Lucky Loser spot! Amazing that he made it fairly competitive. He got the spot of Kevin Anderson, who will likely stay Top 25 in the rankings but whose Top 24 Wimbledon seed is now in danger.

Singles – Second Round: M Matosevic def. M Llodra walkover (hamstring)

Apparently the transition to grass was too much for Michael Llodra after all. Which means no Top Fifty spot for the Frenchman. Tough on Llodra on other grounds — grass is a good surface for him.

Doubles – First Round: (WC) J Murray/Peers def. Dimitrov/Nielsen 7-6(7-5) 6-3

The scheduling here wasn’t the greatest; Jamie and Andy Murray were on court at the same time, so the family couldn’t watch both matches. It didn’t seem to bother Jamie too much. And Andy’s biggest problem was with rain….

Doubles – Second Round: Harrison/Querrey def. (8) Hanley/Matkowski 6-7(2-7) 6-3 10-7

Even playing with a different partner doesn’t seem to be helping Marcin Matkowski….

Wimbledon Seed Update
