German sixth seed Mona Barthel moved ahead of the pack by booking the first of the third-round places as she beat Serb Vesna Dolonc 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
But it was the first round where the major excitement took place, with British 14th seed Heather Watson winning her first match in nearly four months with a 6-4, 7-6(0) defeat of Hungarian Melinda Czink. The 54th-ranked Watson has played only three matches since February after being diagnosed with glandular fever in March. She made her comeback at the French Open, losing to Swiss Stephanie Voegele in the first round.
Slovak veteran Daniela Hantuchova beat Aussie Casey Dellacqua 6-1, 7-6(1) while French 12th seed Kristina Mladenovic switched back to singles after playing the Roland Garros mixed final with Canadian Daniel Nestor. The 20-year-old started with a win over unknown Brit Tara Moore 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-4. But Johanna Konta got one back for the Wimbledon host nation over Japan’s Kurumi Nara 6-2, 6-4.
Belgian ninth seed Yanina Wickmayer defeated Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, 6-2, 7-6(5), American Maria Sanchez put out Slovak Jana Cepelova 6-3, 6-2 and Czech Andrea Hlavackova defeated Russian Olga Puchkova 6-2, 6-4. Former French Open winner and 15th seed Francesca Schiavone defeated Anna Tatishvili 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(3).

German women picked up a victory hat-trick of wins into the second round led by fourth seed Julia Goerges, a winner over Romanian Alexandra Cadantu 6-4, 7-5. No.8 Annika Beck followed suit as she stopped Russia’s Nina Bratchikova 6-2, 6-2 and drawcard Andrea Petkovic won her first match in almost two months as the No. 103 defeated Swede Sofia Arvidsson 6-3, 6-2 with Petkovic confirming she if finally healthy after a run of injuries stretching back several seasons.
Spain’s sixth seed Lourdes Dominguez Lino beat Colombian Mariana Duque-Marino 7-5, 6-3 , fifth seed Lucie Safarova stopped Kazakh Sesil Karatantcheva 6-2, 7-6(9) and French third seed Alize Cornet put out compatriot Pauline Parmentier 6-3, 6-4.
