The grass season of big-hitting Milos Raonic got off to the worst possible start under new coach Ivan Ljubicic as the Canadian lost in the opening round to Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-2. Monfils went up a break early in the match on grass at the Wimbledon clone venue in central Germany and got another break at the same point in the second. The win was the second for the Frenchman in the series and helped cement the Monfils return from a long-running knee injury.

While the event waits for the starts of five-time champion Roger Federer and holder Tommy Haas at midweek, lesser lights continued to get in their grass work with the approach of Wimbledon a week from next Monday. Outspoken Lithuanian Ernests Gulbis, who recently accused the ATP top four of being “boring,” kept it lively on his side of the court as he smashed only one racquet on his way into the second round 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 over Marcos Baghdatis.

German sixth seed Philipp Kohlschreiber started with a win over Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-1 and was joined by compatriots Tobias Kamke and Cedric-Marcel Stebe with home wins. Kamke beat Pole Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-0 and Stebe advanced over Taiwan’s Jimmy Wang 6-2, 6-4.

Argentine Leo Mayer beat German Jan-Lennard Struff 7-6(4), 6-4. Austrian Jurgen Melzer beat Italian Riccardo Ghedin 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4.

London

Californian former champion Sam Querrey withstood five interruptions due to rain before finally completing a 7-6 (13-11), 5-7, 7-6(5) defeat of Slovenian Aljaz Bedene to reach the second round. The weather played a major factor in the match, which took five and a half hours to be completed.

Querrey, 2010 champion, saved a match point but had problems closing out the win. he held a 5-2 lead in the final-set tiebreaker which evaporated before finally taking victory after two and a half hours and 26 aces.

Querrey marked his 200th ATP win with the victory as he earned a 29th grass win over a newcomer who was playing only his second match on grass.

Julien Benneteau, the 11th seed, beat fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 7-6(7), 6-3, while 12th seeded Czech Lukas Rosol – who defeated Rafael Nadal in the Wimbledon second round last year before the Spaniard took seven months off with a knee injury – advanced over Australian Sam Groth 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-2.

Finnish 13th seed Jarkko Nieminen needed only 59 minutes to roll over American Ryan Harrison 6-3, 6-3, while number 14 Uzbek Denis Istomin beat Russia’s Andrei Kuznetsov 7-6(2), 7-6(3). Benjamin Becker spoiled the season grass start of Bernard Tomic winning 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) as the Australian’s banned father John sat in the stands as a paying customer. Queen’s declined to enforce a ban on the bad dad who faces a court date in Spain for an attack on his son’s former racquet stringer last month.

France’s Nicolas Mahut will be hope for a second upset win over match-shy top seed Andy Murray after booking a spot against the Scot 6-3, 6-2 over American Rhyne Williams 6-3, 6-2. A year ago, Mahut stunned Murray in the Queen’s second round.

2007 Queen’s finalist Mahut will be hoping that lightning strikes twice for him on the west London grass against Murray. “Last year I played amazing and I won the match,” said the 31-year-old ranked 226.

“I hope it’s going to be the same. But everyone expects him to win here, to win Wimbledon, so he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

“This will be his first match since, I don’t know, a month. I think if he’s playing here it means he’s feeling 100 per cent. But it’s the first round, especially on grass. I know he’s had some practice here, but still it’s never easy to start a tournament, especially in the grass season.”
