Novak Djokovic ended a rainy day in faint sunshine, advancing into the second round over Belgian David Goffin 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-5. The No. 1 waited through a chilly day of weather interruptions which forced cancellation of ten women’s matches before play was able to resume in early evening.
The Serb was happy to take the victory into the second round in two and a quarter hours with 26 winners and three breaks of his opponent. “It was a good match for me, it was not easy,” Djokovic told fans in French. “He’s a good player with lots of talent. He played aggressive, I’m content with the first round and hope to carry on from here. I really wanted to finish this evening.”
Swiss ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(1), 7-5 while German number 15 Tommy Haas beat Guillaume Rufin 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-3. Fellow German and 16th seed Philipp Kohlschreiber put out Czech teenager Jiri Vesely 7-6(3), 1-6, 7-5, 6-2. Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov had some good fortune as he went through as Colombian opponent Alejandro Falla retired trailing 6-4, 1-0 in their men’s match.
Controversial Australian Bernard Tomic was unable to go the distance as he quit to hand over a 7-5, 7-6 (10-8), 2-1 win to Romanian Victor Hanescu in their rain-interrupted contest. Tomic had complained of a right thigh problem as early as the third game, taking treatment on court.
“It’s very unlucky, on the second point I felt my leg sort of tear and didn’t know what it was. I’ve never felt this pain before. I played on it for about almost an hour and a half until the rain came. I found out when I went into the room that I did tear my muscle. Lucky it’s not huge.”
American Jack Sock defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in a 6-2, 6-2, 7-5 surprise while Russian Mikhail Youzhny stopped Spain’s Pablo Andujar 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-
