Roland Garros
Women’s seeds began with straight-set success as holder Maria Sharapova led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 first-round defeat of Hsieh Su-Wei. No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska followed the winning example 6-1, 6-1 over Shahar Peer. Former winner Li Na, China’s sixth seed, beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-4.
After waiting around the grounds as the last match of a sunny day, Sharapova was moved form the Chatrier court when matches ran long. She was hardly bothered.
“I was just happy that I was able to finish the match. Obviously getting off the court and still seeing the men’s match (Gael Monfils over Tomas Berdych) was still playing, I was happy with the decision that everyone made. Obviously I wanted to finish tonight, so it was a good decision.
“I don’t really feel that I waited too long, it’s usually pretty normal. I practiced and then was waiting. By the time I finished practice, the last match was on the court already, so just the normal usual food and eat and drink and read.”
German eighth seed Angelique Kerber beat compatriot Mona Barthel 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 and tenth seed Caroline Wozniacki picked the perfect moment to win her first spring match on clay, sending home Briton Laura Robson 6-3, 6-2. Italian 15th seed Roberta Vinci stopped Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-3, 6-0.
Wozniacki played down the importance of her first clay success in months. “To be honest, my confidence has always been good,” said the former number one who stood 0-4 on the dirt over the past weeks. “I went into the match believing in myself and believing that I was going out there to win, of course.”
