The NCAA tennis championships in Urbana, Illinois has brought more than a fair amount of business to Champaign County. After the city of Urbana voted to cut funding for the county’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, there was a decision by the tourism board to put more focus on the county than the city itself.
“From the tennis, I think it will be a good economic impact,” CVB President Jayne DeLuce told the News Gazette “I think it will even be bigger in the community pride from hosting it.”
Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing said that just having the tennis championships at the University of Illinois means that Urbana hotels and restaurants will see a jump in business.
She added that hotel-motel tax receipts grew in Urbana at a pace faster than they did in Champaign even without the tennis from $651,499 to $883,598 in 2012.
