Juan Martin del Potro has not given up hope of contesting the French Open even though the world no.7 is currently back home in Argentina in a bid to overcome the respiratory problems that have been affecting him for the last couple of weeks.
Del Potro has been troubled by a bronchial infection since Monte Carlo Rolex Open and the 24 year-old was subsequently forced to miss the Portugal Open in Oerias and then the Mutua Madrid Open.
The player’s doctor, Roberto Peidro, accepted the rest period failed to achieve substantial results. Then Del Potro was clearly well below his normal physical condition in the Internazionale BNL d’Italia defeat to Benoit Paire.
Del Potro flew back to Argentina immediately afterwards and the assumption was he would miss Roland Garros where his best result came when he reached the semi-finals in 2009.
But last night there were signs of optimism from his camp, and Dr. Peidro was quoted as saying: “In order to follow an intensive physical recovery program, with the aim to put him back into full shape in the least possible time.”
An ATP World Tour medical statement said Del Potro had suffered a decline in ‘physical and respiratory capacity’ due to the rest taken to recover from a bronchial spasm, according to his camp. A bronchial spasm is a sudden constriction of the muscles in the walls of the bronchioles.
