Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) Serena Williams def. Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-0
It seems pretty clear, now, who will be the winningest clay player of 2013. And the #1 player at least until Wimbledon. Serena leaves Carla Suarez Navarro at #20, which obviously means no Top 16 seed in Paris.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) Sara Errani def. (2) Maria Sharapova walkover (illness)
Maria Sharapova had no chance at #1 this week, and probably not at Roland Garros, but this is going to put her at a severe handicap for the rest of the summer. Makes you realize how much of tennis is about luck…. Sharapova will stay #2. Sara Errani had already clinched #5, but this makes her grip much stronger; there is a faint chance, if she does well here and Agnieszka Radwanska loses a lot of points at Brussels, that Errani could briefly reach #4. And Errani is showing great luck these days. First Maria Kirilenko retired, then Sharapova didn’t even take the court…. But soon Roland Garros comes off….
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Victoria Azarenka def. Samantha Stosur 6-4 1-6 6-3
An interesting contest, this. Samantha Stosur likes clay better than Victoria Azarenka, and she is more match-tough. But not more brain-tough. So perhaps it isn’t a surprise. It certainly doesn’t make much difference; Azarenka was going to be #3 and Stosur #9 no matter what.
Singles – Quarterfinal: (Q) Simona Halep def. Jelena Jankovic 4-6 6-0 7-5
If and when Jelena Jankovic hires a different coach, we know what they should work on: Serving out matches. Jankovic managed to survive a failure the round before against Li Na. But, here, she spent two and a half hours out there, served for the match, failed to win it, and collapsed. Which leaves her still at #18; the Roland Garros seeding tiers are set.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni 6-2 6-1
It looks like we’re on track for a #1 versus #2 final. Petrova/Srebotnik aren’t going to face a particularly strong set of semifinal opponents:
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Hsieh/Peng def. Cibulkova/Niculescu 6-4 6-4
