Rome
Serb Bojana Jovanovski won her first match since January as she upset former No.1 Caroline Wozniacki 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5). It was the Dane’s fourth consecutive loss on clay and leaves her without a spring victory on the surface heading into the May 26 start of the French Open.
With golfer boyfriend Rory McIlroy in the stands, Wozniacki struck six double-faults and lost serve seven times in a three-hour epic.
In the first round, there was a loss for Russian 11th seed Nadai Petrova, who lost to Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1)
Russian 12th seed Maria Kirilenko beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-3, while Italy’s No. 13 Roberta Vinci needed almost three hours to go past Elena Vesnina 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-4. Dominika Cibulkova, the No. 14, beat Kristina Mladenovic 1-6, 6-2, 6-2; Ursula Radwanska upset 15th seed Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
American Sloane Stephens, seeded 16th, steadied after her post-Australian open slump, beating Italy’s Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-3
Top seed and Madrid champion Serena Williams reached the third round as she hammered Laura Robson 6-2, 6-2 while 2011 Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova beat Sabine Lisicki 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 and Simona Halep upset fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-2.
