Oeiras
Singles – Final: (3) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova def. (4) Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5 6-2
A pretty good start to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s relationship with Martina Hingis. Pavlyuchenkova, despite a very wearing week, picks up her fifth title — and her first on clay; until now, she had won only on hardcourts.
The bad news is, all five titles, including this one, have been small. So small that the title doesn’t even make any difference — #19 Pavlyuchenkova came in, and #19 she remains. She is still 250 points below #18. But this puts her more than 200 points ahead of #20, so her ranking is looking fairly secure going into the two big events at Madrid and Rome.
Carla Suarez Navarro has been playing very well this year, but she is still looking for her first title. At least she defended her points, so she will be able to keep the #23 ranking. But she clearly still has a few things to work on. Like a record of 0-5 in finals.
Doubles – Final: (2) H Chan/Mladenovic def. (4) Jurak/Marosi 7-6(7-3) 6-2
This really is turning into an amazing year for Kristina Mladenovic. This marks five titles for her since last August: Canadian Open with Jans-Ignacik, Quebec City with Malek, Memphis with Voskoboeva, Charleston with Safarova, and now Oeiras with Chan. Five titles, five partners, three surfaces! Amazing someone isn’t trying to snag her as a regular partner; she will clearly be Top Twenty very soon. And yet, she’s playing at Madrid with Voskoboeva, and they’re unseeded. For Chan Hao-Ching, it’s the second title of the year, following Shenzhen with much-injured Chan Yung-Jan. Plus she won the Taipei Challenger last November with Mladenovic; they clearly work well as a team. She too might want to think about what she wants in a long-term partner….
Madrid
We have good news and bad news for Alexandra Dulgheru. The good news is, she is able to play, and she even made it through qualifying here. The bad news is, it may not mean much, since she made it by beating a wildcard named Sara Sorribes Tormo to make the main draw. And she faces Maria Sharapova in her opener. Still, she’s in. Unlike most of the qualifying seeds. #1 Monica Niculescu had lost her opener (to Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, who went on to qualify). #2 Christina McHale made the main draw, but #3 Stefanie Voegele lose her qualifying final to #14 Lesia Tsurenko. #4 Lucie Hradecka, who had semifinalist points to defend, lost her opener to Yulia Putintseva; Putintseva made the main draw, but Hradecka will lose her Top Hundred ranking. #5 Annika Beck had lost her opener to Sorribes Tormo. #6 Chanelle Scheepers qualified. #7 Olga Govortsova lost her opener to Camila Giorgi, who went on to the main draw. #8 Madison Keys lost her qualifying final to #14 Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
Singles – First Round: (7) Sara Errani def. Urszula Radwanska 6-3 6-1
Urszula Radwanska came in right around the cutoff for a French Open seed. She might still get it, especially since she could still earn points at Rome, but she obviously won’t clinch this week.
Singles – First Round: Julia Goerges def. Bojana Jovanovski 6-4 6-1
Bojana Jovanovski is just starting to have to deal with required tournaments other than the Slams. This will presumably cost her a few points, but probably not enough to make much difference.
Singles – First Round: Sabine Lisicki def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-1
There isn’t much to say about this; Sofia Arvidsson losing on clay is about as likely as… the sun rising in the morning. Although getting blown off the court in 45 minutes seems a little extreme even for her.
Singles – First Round: Daniela Hantuchova def. Sloane Stephens 6-3 7-5
The great Stephens Swoon continues. She will once again end up below the Top Fifteen.
Singles – First Round: Alize Cornet def. Kiki Bertens 7-5 7-6(10-8)
Kiki Bertens remains below #50.
Singles – First Round: Kirsten Flipkens def. Mona Barthel 6-4 6-1
It’s too early to be sure, especially since the new rankings aren’t out yet, but this might well put Kirsten Flipkens in the Top Twenty.
Singles – First Round: Laura Robson def. Magdalena Rybarikova 6-7(4-7) 6-2 6-2
We’d guess this will suffice to put Laura Robson in the Top Forty. It’s going to be hard for her to earn a Roland Garros seed — but could she have a shot for Wimbledon?
Singles – First Round: Lourdes Dominguez Lino def. Simona Halep 6-2 4-6 6-4
This was the very, very late match — the last to start, and it took almost three hours. Lucky for Lourdes Dominguez Lino that she gets a rest day….
Doubles – First Round: Jankovic/Lucic-Baroni def. (6) Groenefeld/Peschke 7-6(7-5) 7-6(7-1)
This is proving a very, very difficult comeback for Kveta Peschke. Her ranking is likely to fall hard if she can’t pick things up.
Doubles – First Round: Grandin/Uhlirova def. Moulton-Levy/Rosolska 6-3 7-6(8-6)
