He won’t be starting officially with new coach Magnus Norman until mid-May, but Swiss Stan Wawrinka is already excited about the possibilities of working with the 2000 French Open finalist as his mentor at the season’s biggest ATP events.
The Swede and the Swiss had a trial session last week in Lausanne before Wawrinka traveled to Operas for the Portugal Open. “We trained four days, got to know each other and discussed a lot,” the No.16 told Zurich’s Ages Danzig. “Magnus is a motivator, a positive person who knows the good tennis player and as a coach. After all, he was once the world No. 2.”
Warlike revealed that he had been dreaming of working with the former clay ace for some time now. “I pursued him even when he was still playing – he retired a decade ago – and met him occasionally when he was coach of Robin Soderling, with whom I trained often.”
Norman will be the second Swedish coach for Wawrinka after also working in the past with Peter Lundgren, coach to the younger Roger Federer back in the day. But the two Scandinavians could not be more dis-similar, with the jolly goateed Lundgren always up for a good time while Norman definitely maintains a quieter, lower profile.
“He (Norman) is a different type and has a different experience than Lundgren, but I do not want to compare the two. I am convinced that he can bring a lot to me – on the court and off,” said the discreet Wawrinka. “Magnus will be in Madrid, Rome and Paris to get a feel for how I play.”
