epa03517832 File -- File photo showing Spanish Rafael Nadal during his match against Swiss Roger Federer at Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, 31 December 2011. The tournament organizers announced on 25 December 2012 that 'Rafael Nadal has been forced to make a last-minute withdrawal from the 2012 event due to a stomach virus,' and 'was advised by doctors not to travel or compete due to the illness.' Nadal has not played since June 2012, when he was eliminated in Wimbledon's 2nd round by Czech Lukas Rosol. He was supposed to come back after a successful knee injury rehab. EPA/ALI HAIDER  |

Barcelona

Singles – Third Round: (2) R Nadal def. (13) B Paire 7-6(7-2) 6-2

Not exactly a surprise, but it leaves Benoit Paire at probably #32. He’ll have to wait a little longer to clinch a Roland Garros seed.

Singles – Third Round: T Robredo def. (3) T Berdych 3-6 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Talk about living dangerously…. But Tommy Robredo survived, and has now clinched his Top Forty spot. Tomas Berdych will stay at #6.

Singles – Third Round: (5) M Raonic def. (Q) E Gulbis 6-2 7-6(8-6)

There must be something about the clay here that Milos Raonic really likes. This leaves him just one win short of defending his points.

Singles – Third Round: A Ramos def. (6) K Nishikori 6-4 7-6(7-4)

For some reason, Kei Nishikori is doing even worse on clay this year than last. He loses any chance of rising above #15.

Singles – Third Round: (8) P Kohlschreiber def. (11) M Klizan 1-6 7-6(7-2) 7-6(7-5)

It looks as if Martin Klizan will hit the Top Thirty — but just barely.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) R Nadal def. A Ramos 6-3 6-0

We’ll just assume you aren’t surprised about this one…. Rafael Nadal finished both his matches in just about two and a half hours, so (relatively speaking) he should even still be fairly fresh.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (4) N Almagro def. (7) J Monaco 6-3 7-5

Nicolas Almagro is now adding points, but it isn’t yet enough to help his ranking. He leaves Juan Monaco no better than #20, and it might be #21 — it depends on how Almagro does in the next round. If Almagro wins, then Monaco stays #20, so the Argentine had better root for the guy who beat him….

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) M Raonic def. T Robredo 6-7(5-7) 6-3 7-6(7-2)

Tommy Robredo was on the court for more than four and a half hours Friday; little wonder if he ran out of gas at the end! He will have to settle for #37, meaning of course that he will need more to be seeded in Paris. Milos Raonic defends his points and should stay at #13.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (8) P Kohlschreiber def. (16) T Bellucci Walkover (Abdominal)

This should have been bad news for Philipp Kohlschreiber — Thomaz Bellucci was rested and Kohlschreiber tired. Instead, the German lucked out — although he still needs one more win (against Almagro) to make the Top Twenty. Thomaz Bellucci remains at the low end of the Top Forty.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (2) Granollers/M Lopez def. Monaco/Nishikori 6-2 6-3

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Marrero/Verdasco def. Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 7-5 7-6(7-3)

Fyrstenberg/Matkowski are really struggling this year. We’ve no reason to think they aren’t getting along; maybe one of them is getting old….

Bucharest

Singles – Quarterfinal: G Garcia-Lopez def. (1) J Tipsarevic (WC) 6-3 3-6 6-4

Janko Tipsarevic’s 2013 under-performance continues. It doesn’t matter much, though; he was going to be #10 no matter what.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) G Simon def. D Brands 6-1 7-5

Gilles Simon has started to add points, but he is still in danger of falling to #17. Possibly even #18, should Philipp Kohlschreiber win Barcelona.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (5) F Mayer def. V Hanescu 6-3 7-6(7-3)

Florian Mayer will gain a couple of spots but needs one more win to hit the Top 25.

Singles – Quarterfinal: L Rosol def. (8) V Troicki 6-3 6-1

These two came in ranked just two places apart, and of course Viktor Troicki is in a bad slump. No big surprise. But it swaps their rankings — Troicki will stay around #46, with Lukas Rosol a couple of spots higher.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Mirnyi/Tecau def. Seppi/Troicki 6-3 3-6 10-8

Doubles – Semifinal: Dlouhy/Marach def. (3) Gonzalez/Lipsky 6-4 6-4
