The French Open has followed the trend of both the Australian and US Open’s and announced a significant rise in prize money for the 2013 event at Roland Garros that will begin in less than six weeks time on May 26.
This year’s prize fund will show a 3 million Euros increase from 2012 to the overall figure 22 million ($US 28.77 million). However the ongoing situation with the expansion of Roland Garros and the current impasse with the Paris Assembly means there are other issues on the agenda of the French Tennis Federation (FFT) and this year’s prize fund falls short of the Australian Open’s $31 million and the US Open’s announced $33.6m.
In making the announcement the FFT added further increases totaling another 10 million Euros ($13.08 million) are expected by 2016.
Once again pressure from the ATP World Tour means players eliminated in the second, third and fourth rounds will receive 25 percent more than they did last year.
French Tennis Federation director Gilbert Ysern maintained his organization “wishes to maintain its effort with regards to players eliminated during the first week.”
This year the men’s and women’s singles champions will collect 1.5 million Euros ($1.96 million) compared to 1.25 million Euros ($1.64 million) in 2012.
