A day is a long time in tennis, particularly for somebody who is just 20 years old and still finding their way on the global scene. So just 24 hours after Heather Watson maintained she was ‘burned out’ and in need on a lengthy rest from the sport, she decided such drastic measures maybe weren’t necessarily the answer.
Given time to calm down and give her short term future some serious thought after her Sony Open first round loss to Ayumi Morita of Japan, Watson, Britain’s world no.39 opted to carry on with her plans to play her scheduled next tournament, Charleston’s Family Circle Cup at the start of April.
From there, she will go on to Argentina for the Fed Cup play-off match that could return Great Britain to the World Group for the first time in 20 years.
“I’ll still play my normal schedule,” said Watson on Wednesday. “Charleston in a week-and-a-half, and the Fed Cup, which are on my schedule, but I’ll just have a few days off before that.”
It would appear the pressure of expectation is getting to Watson whose Japan Open in Osaka last October was the first by a British woman since 1988.
“I think after my match I just wasn’t thinking straight and said things that could be interpreted in the wrong way,” she said.
“When I said I was burnt out and wanted to take a break, I meant I wanted to go home to Guernsey for a few days. I haven’t been home to Guernsey since I left in December. I basically just want to put my racket down for three or four days, have a rest and see my friends and family, as I haven’t done that this year yet.”
