Ernests Gulbis, the son of a Latvian oligarch who is once again and back on the rise up the ATP World Tour rankings after winning last week’s title in Delray Beach, revealed his mother advised him to retire from tennis at the age of 24.
Gulbis is continuing his good run of form at Indian Wells, beating the troubled Serb Janko Tipsarevic. But he revealed: “My mother, actually this year after the Bergamo [challenger] tournament when I lost in the first round, told me that I should quit tennis. I told her ‘Give me one more month’. So now at least she’s happy.” ©Daily tennis news wire
