The decision by Hamburg to drop out of the chase for the right to bid for a possible ATP grass court event has been seized by German rival Stuttgart. The Mercedes Cup has the backing of the elite hometown automobile powerhouse as it seeks to switch from clay to grass as the ATP extends the brief grass-court season from 2015.
Hamburg, formerly a Masters 1000 which was demoted several years ago in a brutal downsizing and then lost a court case against the ATP, gave up the fight and appears content to maintain its place in July as a 500 series on clay.
“The Hamburg withdrawal does not alter the fact that the Mercedes Cup the bid to host a grass tournament in 2015 will continue to push ahead with full of energy and professionalism,” said Stuttgart boss Edwin Weindorfer.
“The fact that title sponsor of Mercedes-Benz, the TC Weissenhof and all sponsors and partners of the tournament are fully behind this project increases our confidence that the Mercedes Cup obtained from the ATP awarded the contract to carry out a turf events. The announcement that the DTB will support after the withdrawal of Hamburg now the Stuttgart application fully, we are pleased to note. ”
Further discussions on the Stuttgart candidacy will be held at the Indian Wells and Miami Masters events this month.
