Being the sporting word’s most prominent romantic couple comes with a price for former tennis world no.1 Caroline Wozniacki and current golfing world leader Rory McIlroy. And the two are both at pains to point out that just because things haven’t gone too well in their respective areas of competition lately, everything is fine in their relationship.

Reports that the pair’s 18 month long love affair is on the rocks circulated after Wozniacki lost in the first round of the Malaysian Open to world no.186. Qiang Wiang at much the same time McIlroy walked off the course mid-way through his second round at the PGA National-staged Honda Classic in Palm Beach, Florida last week

“Just because I have a bad day on the golf course and Caroline loses a match in Malaysia does not mean we are breaking up,” McIlroy said before his attempt to get back to winning ways at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral.

“I would rather keep my private life as private as possible, but everything on that front it is all great and I am looking forward to seeing her when she gets to Miami.”

Breaking her preparation for the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Wozniacki amplified her boyfriend’s message. The Dane had been joking about McIlroy during her stay at the Dubai Duty Free Championships late last month and she commented on the constant observance of their relationship she said: “We’ve both been around the media so long, that honestly we don’t even notice it.

“I didn’t have to call him to make sure (we were still together); it was not necessary.”

And Wozniacki was prepared to comment on McIlroy’s much publicized walk off the course last week. The Irishman cited intense pain from a wisdom tooth but has subsequently insisted to spectators it was the wrong thing to do.

“Rory apologized and it doesn’t affect me,” she said. “Rory did a really good job at the press conference. He was honest and said what he thought. He’s gonna go out this week and hopefully play some good golf.”
