Kuala Lumpur

Typical tropical rain pelted the Malaysian capital, putting paid to the opening-day program. Three matches were suspended, with Akgul Amanmuradova level with Croatian Ana Savic 4-6, 6-4, 6-6, South African Chanel Simmonds leading Nadiya Kichenok of the Ukraine 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 and Kazakh Zarina Diyas leading Japan’s Erika Sema 6-3, 5-1.

Acapulco

Three women’s seeds got on court on the final year of clay at the mixed WTA-ATP tournament, with fourth seed Irina Begu of Romania starting with a win over Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Fifth seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands beat Canadian Sharon Fichman 6-2, 7-5 while No. 7 Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino put out Flavia Pennetta, playing only her third match since an August injury, 7-5, 6-3.

Former Bulgarian and current Kazakh Sesil Karatantcheva advanced over local Ximena Hermoso 6-0 6-3; Spain’s Estrella Cabeza Candela beat Maria Joao Koehler of Portugal 6-2, 6-0.

Florianopolis

No. 2 seed Yaroslava Shvedova was upset in the first round Monday by Hungarian Melinda Czink 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. The only other seed in play was No. 4 Chanelle Scheepers who needed three sets to defeat qualifier Adriana Perez.
