As she approaches a possible return to No. 1 status, Serena Williams can’t seem to work out her sentiments on the possibility. In Doha this week and needing a semi-final placing to clinch the top WTA spot and displace Victoria Azarenka, the American can’t seem to get her public story straight.
“I don’t know, I had a great chance to be No. 1 (at the Australian Open) and I wanted it lot, but I didn’t get there,” she said, referring to a quarter-final loss to Sloane Stephens. “It would be great. I obviously want it, but it’s not the only thing I want. If it happens, great. If not, I won’t miss anything, I don’t think.”
After that bout of petulance, her opinion suddenly seemed to change, with the 31-year-old suddenly turning 180 degrees and declaring that seizing the spot would, of course, be just fine with her.
Williams may have been glum in previous pronouncements due to the injuries which held her up in Melbourne, a badly swollen ankle and back pain. “I just see how it plays out – I’ll just really do the best that I can,” she said. “If that’s winning a tournament or five, that’s great. If that’s winning zero, you know, at least I tried. So I’ll just give it 100 per cent.”
