Rotterdam (Thursday)

Singles – Second Round: (1) R Federer def. (WC) T de Bakker 6-3 6-4

Another efficient win for Roger Federer, but the way this draw is shaking out, he wasn’t likely to be challenged before the final anyway.

Singles – Second Round: (2) J del Potro def. (Q) E Gulbis 7-6(7-5) 6-3

Juan Martin del Potro won’t rise above #7 this week, but he looks to be in good enough form that he might reverse last year’s loss to Roger Federer in the final here.

Singles – Second Round: M Baghdatis def. (4) R Gasquet 6-4 6-4

So typical: Once again Richard Gasquet leaves his best results in the 250 point events. He can’t fall below #10 this week, but he won’t rise.

Singles – Second Round: J Nieminen def. (Q) M Bachinger def. 6-3 5-7 6-3

Truly disappointing for Matthias Bachinger, who might well have hit the Top Hundred had he won this.

Singles – Second Round: M Klizan def. (WC) I Sijsling 6-2 6-4

This will take Martin Klizan to probably #28.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Lindstedt/Zimonjic def. Fleming/Marray 4-6 0-1 retired (Marray/Right Calf Muscle Strain)

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski def. (Alt) Janowicz/Nieminen 4-6 7-5 10-8

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) de Bakker/Huta Galung def. Benneteau/Gasquet 6-4 3-6 10-7 .

Sao Paulo (Wednesday)

Singles – First Round: (Q) P Capdeville def. H Zeballos 6-7(6-7) 6-0 3-0, retired (Nausea And Fatigue)

A lousy way to follow up a first title. Zeballos will remain below the Top Forty.

Singles – First Round: (Q) J Souza def. R Ramirez Hidalgo 7-6(8-6), retired (Right Ankle)

Not a good day for injuries, obviously.

Singles – First Round: A Montanes def. P Lorenzi 6-4 6-4

Albert Montanes has managed to make his way back into the Top Hundred, and this should help a little more.

Singles – First Round: D Nalbandian def. (Q) J Aguilar 7-5 5-7 6-3

David Nalbandian was involved in Davis Cup, and had a doubles win here. but this is his first ATP singles match to the year. Not the most comfortable win, but he did win….

Singles – Second Round: M Alund def. (4) J Chardy 6-4 4-6 7-6(7-5)

There will be no upward move for Jeremy Chardy, although it doesn’t appear all that likely that he will fall. Martin Alund is now very close to the Top Hundred. Pretty amazing — he’s at a career high, at 27 years old.

Doubles – First Round: Bellucci/Souza def. (1) Bracciali/Melo 6-4 5-7 10-7

Doubles – First Round: Bolelli/Fognini def. Brown/Kas 7-5 6-2

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Demoliner/Zerbini def. Gimeno-Traver/Ramos 6-4 7-5

Doubles – First Round: Cabal/Giraldo def. (WC) Clezar/Elias 3-6 6-3 10-8

Doubles – Quarterfinal: Marach/Zeballos def. Nadal/Nalbandian Walkover (Nadal – Knee Overuse)

This must have been one of those race-for-the-exits matches. It will be interesting to see if Marach/Zeballos play the semifinal….

Thursday so far….

Singles – Second Round: S Bolelli def. (3) J Monaco 7-5 6-2

Is Juan Monaco still suffering the Post Davis Cup blues? It’s too early to know just where he will end up, but it will be no better than #14.

Singles – Second Round: F Volandri def. (5) T Bellucci 6-3 6-2

Pretty amazing based on recent results — but Filippo Volandri is defending finalist points; he needs to make a last stand here. He drops Thomaz Bellucci below #35.

Singles – Second Round: A Montanes def. (7) P Andujar 7-5 6-2

Pablo Andujar will remain around #45. Albert Montanes seems to be showing that, yes, he does still have something left. At least as long as the surface is clay.

San Jose (Wednesday)

Singles – First Round: M Russell def. (Q) D Young 6-3 7-5

When speedster meets speedster, the advantage is evidently with the veteran.

Singles – First Round: A Falla def. F Cipolla 7-6(7-1) 7-6(12-10)

Surprising that Falla chose to play here rather than in Brazil, but so far, it looks like a good idea.

Singles – First Round: (WC) S Johnson def. I Karlovic 6-7(2-7) 6-4 7-6(8-6)

It’s hard to believe that Steve Johnson came in as the higher-ranked of these two (if only by one spot), but it’s true. And likely to stay that way, after this.

Singles – First Round: M Ebden def. (Q) R de Voest 6-2 7-5

This won’t put Matthew Ebden back in the Top Hundred, but it’s a step in that direction.

Singles – Second Round: (2) J Isner def. V Pospisil 7-6(7-3) 2-6 6-3

A tough start for John Isner, considering that he needs a title to earn any points. And he probably won’t rise even if he does win the title.

Singles – Second Round: (4) T Haas def. J Levine 6-3 6-1

Tommy Haas, unlike Isner, has room for points. This will very likely take him to at least #21.

Doubles – First Round: (4) Malisse/Moser def. Murray/Peers 6-4 6-4

Doubles – First Round: (WC) Hewitt/Matosevic def. Marx/Mergea 1-6 7-6(7-5) 10-2

Doubles – First Round: Elgin/Istomin def. Monroe/Stadler 6-4 6-4
