Australian Open
Singles – Fourth Round: (2) R Federer def. (13) M Raonic 6-4 7-6(7-4) 6-2
There was a lot of talk, before this match, about how much trouble Milos Raonic had given Roger Federer in their previous meetings, the thought being that Raonic would have learned from his past experience and become a bigger threat. But it looks as if Federer was the one who educated himself. Raonic ought to stay #15, which is where he came in.
Singles – Fourth Round: (3) A Murray def. (14) G Simon 6-3 6-1 6-3
Gilles Simon had been hurting so much after his previous match that he sounded like he didn’t think he would even be able to play. Give him credit for trying. At least he lasted long enough to make the Top Fifteen.
Singles – Fourth Round: (7) J Tsonga def. (9) R Gasquet 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-2
Richard Gasquet is still #10 in safe points, but he loses the chance to clinch his Top Ten spot.
Singles – Fourth Round: J Chardy def. (21) A Seppi 5-7 6-3 6-2 6-2
This was the day’s only upset, and it leaves Jeremy Chardy as the only unseeded quarterfinalist — indeed, the only guy left who is ranked below #11. Andreas Seppi will probably be #18; we show Chardy up to #25, and of course he’ll go even higher if he somehow can beat Andy Murray.
Doubles – Third Round: Bolelli/Fognini def. (5) Bhupathi/Nestor 6-3 4-6 6-3
The doubles upsets just keep coming; the only Top Ten players left after this are the Bryans, Marc Lopez, and Marcel Granollers. Mahesh Bhupathi loses his Top Ten chance; the Top Ten is now closed, and looks as follows:
1..(1) BryanM………….8780
2..(2) BryanB………….8710
3..(6) LopezM………….7150
4..(5) Nestor………….6540
5.(10) Granollers………6140
6..(7) Mirnyi………….6100
7..(3) Paes……………5435
8..(8) Tecau…………..5370
8..(9) Lindstedt……….5370
10..(4) Stepanek………..5305
Doubles – Third Round: (11) Marrero/Verdasco def. Benneteau/Roger-Vasselin 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-4
David Marrero is now just below the Top Twenty; Fernando Verdasco is on the brink of the Top 25.
Doubles – Third Round: Cabal/Farah def. Baghdatis/Dimitrov 7-6(8-6) 7-6(7-5)
Doubles – Third Round: Haase/Sijsling def. Anderson/Erlich 6-2 7-5
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Mirza/B Bryan def. Spears/Lipsky 4-6 6-1 10-4 (Match TB)
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Hradecka/Cermak def. (7) Hlavackova/Bracciali 6-4 7-6(9-7)
And here we have another contest between partners in women’s doubles. This is a clear triumph for Mixed rankings; neither team would have been seeded in Mixed, but Hradecka/Cermak were several spots ahead of Hlavackova/Bracciali.
Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Hsieh/Bopanna def. Hantuchova/Fognini 6-1 7-5
