LLEYTON HEWITT (AUS), in front of a near-capacity crowd, clinched the 2013 AAMI Classic this afternoon in emphatic fashion. Hewitt, in scintillating form, defeated JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO (ARG) in straight sets, 6-1 6-4, claiming his second AAMI Classic title in three years. Post match, Hewitt commented: “I felt like every match I got better and better and more confident” and “against Berdych and even more so today I felt like I hit the ball as clean as I have in a long time.” Hewitt payed credit to Del Potro in his on-court acceptance speech, saying the Argentinean was one of his closest mates on tour and wished him the best for the Australian Open.
The post-match ceremony took on a family flavour as Hewitt’s three children surrounded their Dad on court, while son, Cruz, asked Del Potro for his signature.
In the first match of the day, world number 6 TOMAS BERDYCH (CZE) post a masterful win over MARCOS BAGHDATIS (CYP), 6-3 6-2 in the play-off for third and fourth spot.
