Wozniacki Begins Her Road Back To The Top

As Caroline Wozniacki starts a New Year determined to work her way back up the ranking to the world no.1 position she occupied a year ago, she has come to the time honoured realisation that if things are not broken, there’s no need to fix them. So after experimenting with and Thomas Johansson as coaches in 2012, she has reverted to working exclusively with her father Piotr.

“My Dad is back as my full time 100 per cent coach. We experimented with two other coaches in 2012 and it didn’t work out,” admitted Wozniacki. “Now I’m back to working with my Dad and feel really good about the progress we are making together. He was my coach when I finished 2010 and 2011 as the top ranked player in the world. I hope to get back to that top spot soon.”

Wozniacki has employed a new trainer and hitting partner, both from Poland so communication with Warsaw-born Piotr should be excellent. “Two great guys who have done a wonderful job over the past several weeks,” she enthused. “They keep me motivated each day to continue working to get better and stronger.”

Although Wozniacki appeared to be a regular as some of the world’s top-flight golf tournaments at the end of last year, supporting her top ranked boyfriend Rory McIlroy and playing supposedly jovial but ultimately controversial exhibition events with Serena Williams, she managed to fit in ten days high altitude training in Aspen, Colorado.

“Pre-season training is so important for players because this is really our only extended period of time where we can work on improving our weaknesses and turning them into strengths,” said the 21 year-old Dane.

“During the tournament weeks we are just trying to maintain our form and not get injured. The pre-season allows us to build up our bodies and prepare for the up-coming year. Tennis is such a long season that it takes a lot of work and preparation to be ready for a ten to 11 month grind.”

However Wozniacki will not want her opening WTA event of the year to be a portent of what is to come. She was beaten by Kazakhstan’s world no.103 Ksenia Pervak at the Brisbane International.

However she was not downhearted and insisted the most important fact what she was totally pain free from the knee issues that affected her through 2012: “”You know, I’m still no.10 in the world,” she pointed out.

“The most important thing is that you’re healthy. I had some struggles with my health last year. Obviously that makes a difference. But as long as I’m healthy and I can fight and be competitive, that is the most important thing.”
