Woodbridge Mulling Fed Cup Captaincy

Todd Woodbridge might throw his hat into the ring as a potential replacement for recently resigned Australian Fed Cup captain Dave Taylor. Woodbridge is already Tennis Australia’s head of professional tennis, and he told The Age that because his job entails most of that role anyway, he might be willing to take the job on.

Woodbridge had until late Friday to submit his application.

However, there are a number of folks involved with pro tennis in Australia who would like to see a woman named to the job. Rennae Stubbs, who was a Davis Cup warrior for her country, is considered by some to be the frontrunner and badly wants the job, and former top 10 player Alicia Molik is also campaigning for the position.

All of the aforementioned candidates are also television commentators, which can impact their broadcast careers, as some players do not like to be criticized on air by their captains.

Former US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe experienced that on occasion during his tenure as he worked for ESPN with comments about Andy Roddick and James Blake.

Still, that former doubles star Woodbridge even thought to throw his hat in the ring considering his other responsibilities surprised some.

Woodbridge said. “We’re not the favorites, but you look at the line-up and we’ve got Sam, and if Jarmila can get her game back on track, she can beat anybody, and you’ve got young Ash Barty sitting down below who’s probably ready soon to move up into the team. So we’ve got some potential over the next three years to actually win the Fed Cup, and a huge goal of mine is to get all of that in place and really have a crack at doing that for women’s tennis.
