As she heads into the closing years of her career, Serena Williams is on track to bid for the title of oldest woman to ever hold the WTA top ranking. But the 31-year-old must first get past younger rivals Victoria Azaranka and Maria Sharapova over the course of the next months of the new season.
The dream scenario would suit Williams down to the ground were she somehow able to achieve it. The American is starting her bid as she plays in Brisbane to prepare for the January 14 start of the Australian Open.
Williams, current third on the WTA, ended 2012 with the title at the year-end championships after winning both Wimbledon and the US Open.
Williams is aiming to replace Chris Evert, who dominated the rankings nearly three decades ago aged 30 years 11 months in 1985.
Serena said her tennis now is all about staying relaxed and enjoying the moments on court. “I just got older and I realized I can’t be a fun girl for the rest of my life,”Williams said in a brief philosophical moment.
“I could be the oldest number one. I don’t know how that goes with the funnest,” said the woman who insisted that she had not bothered with New Year’s Eve festivities. “I’ve been having insomnia. I don’t know what time zone I’m in. I don’t know if I’m in Florida or if I’m in Mauritius or if I’m in Brazil.
