World no.1 Novak Djokovic delivered a message of warning to all his rivals when he celebrated victory at Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship by declaring he is intent on becoming the first player in the Open era to win three successive Australian Open titles.

Speaking after his hard fought 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Spain’s Nicolas Almagro in the Abu Dhabi final, following a more dominant straight sets victory against world no.5 David Ferrer, Djokovic insisted such success at Melbourne Park was a distinct possibility because he is going into 2013 already playing ‘amazing tennis’.

The 25 year-old Serb already has three Aussie Open titles to his name but wants three in succession after beating Andy Murray in the 2011 final and Rafael Nadal in last year’s marathon classic. “I’m very motivated to hear that nobody has done this so I will try to make history there,” he said.

“I will be very flattered to be the first person to do that. The Australian Open is my most successful Grand Slam and hopefully I can get a shot at the title next year.”

Djokovic, who rounded off last year’s official calendar by beating Roger Federer to win the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London seven weeks ago, is delighted with his preparations for the new campaign.

“It felt great, after a few weeks of preparation and hard work, more focusing on fitness and just gradually increasing the hours on the tennis court.

‘It was a perfect performance against one of the best players in the world, especially in 2012 where he had his best year.

“It is a great confidence boost for me. It’s something I will look at as a positive indication of my form in this tournament.”
