Serena Williams has extended her Christmas holiday thanks to a doctor’s note, which will keep her out of a December 29 exhibition at the Thai beach resort of Hua Hin. Williams, never known as a paragon of reliability, dropped the scheduling bombshell on local organizers with a medical letter testifying to a toe problem.

With tickets already sold, officials found themselves facing a problem. But they also found a solution, with world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, who is much more at home in “exotic” Asia than the terminally Americanized Williams,

The Belarus belter will play China ‘s Li Na in the well-paid hit-and-giggle at the provincial city 200 kilometres south of Bangkok noted as the resort for the country’s royalty complete with its own summer palace.

Williams sent officials a doctor’s note from one Jeffrey J. Rockefeller DPM explaining that his client was “treated for a chronic foot disorder which involved minor procedures performed on both of her great toes,” on December 13, 2012. He added that she needed to “minimize” her activity during the post-op period.”

Williams added:”I send my sincere regrets as I announce that I am unable to play in the Hua Hin World Tennis Exhibition next week. I was really looking forward to playing in Thailand , seeing my fans there, and experiencing the amazing culture.

“Unfortunately, I am being advised by my doctors to take more time to heal following a minor procedure I needed to address my ongoing foot issues. Thank you to everyone for your understanding and support, and I hope to make it back to Thailand for the event next year.”

Li, an Asian tennis heroine since winning Roland Garros in 2011, will be playing in the kingdom for the first time.
