Serena Williams is trumpeting her comeback chances on a “goodwill” tour of Africa, with the American not shy about boasting that she is headed back to world No. 1 status.
Williams pulled no punches as she and elder sister Venus did the rounds in South Africa, calling it “just a matter of time” before she against rules the game – this time at age 31.
Williams has staked her claim to the top after winning a fifth Wimbledon, the Olympic gold medal and the US open during 2012. But she then skipped the autumn WTA season only to re-appear and beat Maria Sharapvoa for the year-end title in Turkey.
The American now stands third in the world behind Victoria Azarenka and Sharapova, who won the other two Grand Slams this season. “I’ve been No. 1 before and believe me, I’ll be No. 1 again. It’s just a matter of time.”.
The Williams pair are on a tour of southern Africa, collecting some pocket change through exhibitions between themselves, including one in Lagos, Nigeria as well as another in Johannesburg.
