With the London World Tour Finals proceeded by this week’s Paris Masters comprising the last events of a busy 2012 season, coach Ivan Lendl says he is expecting more top performances from pupil Andy Murray in 2013 as the Scot hopefully takes aim at the No. 1 ATP ranking.
The pair, who combined as a team before the start of the current campaign, produced a US Open trophy for Murray in September which brought the first Grand Slam title to Britain for more than three-quarters of a century.
Now there could be more to come after a post-season training block as usual in the fourth-ranked Murray’s hot-weather base of Miami. “I don’t see why Andy should not have another big year in 2013, Lendl told London media in the run-up to the last two events of the season.
“I’ve never been a fan of how many weeks someone is at No 1. I’m more interested in winning majors because then No1 comes as a by-product and it shows consistency. Being No.1 was an honor and I take my hat off to Roger Federer for doing 300 weeks at the top.”
Lendl added: “Andy understands that becoming No. 1 is not only about playing well in the majors, it also takes consistency throughout the year to achieve that. I don’t see any reason why Andy won’t win many more Grand Slam titles.”
Murray has not played since losing the Shanghai final this month to Novak Djokovic, who will also be present in Paris and London as second seed behind Roger Federer.
