Round Robin – White Group: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (9) Samantha Stosur 6-0 6-3

Samantha Stosur was really messed up in this event. The only thing that keeps her from being dead last in her group is the fact that Petra Kvitova was also in the group and also went winless. Stosur ends the year at #9, and of course does not make the semifinal.

Round Robin – White Group: (4) Agnieszka Radwanska def. (7) Sara Errani 6-7(6-8) 7-5 6-4

Talk about making it to the semifinal the hard way… Agnieszka Radwanska was out there for three and a half hours. It’s hard to imagine her having much left in the tank after this. But she does make the semifinal; she is #2 in the White Group. Sara Errani is third in the group — which means no upward movement, but she can certainly boast of having had the best year of her career!

Round Robin – Red Group: (1) Victoria Azarenka def. (8) Li Na 7-6(7-4) 6-3

And so Victoria Azarenka survives her tribulations to post a record of 2-1 and earn the #2 spot in the Red Group. That earns her a semifinal meeting with Maria Sharapova; the other semifinal will feature Serena Williams against Agnieszka Radwanska — which, given Radwanska’s long day, seems almost a free pass to the final for Serena. The interest will be in the Sharapova/Azarenka contest.

As a side effect, the final rankings are settled — and they will be the same rankings we had coming in.
