Today was my first day to go to the site and I met up with Brian Cooney from IMG. I first met Brian in 1995 after Mary Pierce won the Australian Open; he was assisting her during the hours in the aftermath of winning a slam.
The site is at the Sydney Olympic park (Homebush) where in 2000 the Olympics were held. Prior to moving the tournament to this site it was held in “White City” one of the older more traditional clubs of Sydney and a lot more convenient for the crowds and the players.
The players’ lounge was being set up and the all the courts were being prepared. The site does give the player a much better feel for getting ready for the big stage in Melbourne and the oval court really gives the spectator the best view of the court from every angle.
I prefer to get my credentials the day before I go to work so when I get to the site and get ready for the day, I can just go straight to the practice court desk (Where I met up today with Buzz who has been booking courts since the times I met him in White City)
So nice to see the old familiar faces all across the world and feels like coming back home every time I come back to Australia. For those that have never been, you are really missing out.
