A sign of a true champion is the ability to rise to a challenge…so Belgian Yanina Wickmayer proved herself worthy of that status as she began the defence of her ASB Classic singles title.
Faced with a formidable opponent – former world number one Danira Safina of Russia – the second seed seemed on track to continue a proud record of never having lost a set in Auckland.
Wickmayer took out the opening set 6-3 and was up an early break in the second when momentum swung Safina’s way. When she seized the set in a tiebreaker, the contest was poised to go either way.
But then the champion showed the steel that got her there, breezing through the final set with a couple of service breaks.
