KEYS, HALEP AND SAFAROVA LEAD ALL-STAR LINE-UP IN BIRMINGHAM
Defending Aegon Classic Birmingham champion Madison Keys, former Grand Slam finalists Simona Halep and Lucie Safarova are all set to join Great Britain’s Johanna Konta at the Edgbaston Priory Club from 17-25th June this year.
“Winning the title in Birmingham last year was an unbelievable moment for me and I’m looking forward to getting back to defend my title,” said Keys. “It’ll be tough because you’re always competing against great players there but it’ll always be a special tournament for me and I know I can play well on those courts.”
World No.7 and British No.1 Konta will be bidding to become the first British women to lift the Maud Watson Trophy. In-form Konta won the biggest title of her career last month at the Miami Open.
This year’s tournament boasts more than $800,000 in prize-money pool and along with the Aegon International Eastbourne is one of two top level WTA Premier women’s tennis events leading into The Championships, Wimbledon. It is the most prestigious annual women’s sports event in the Midlands and has been drawing world class tennis players to Birmingham since 1983, boasting Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber amongst its former champions.
Entries for the main draw of the tournament close on 8th May, with more big names likely to be added to the line-up in the coming weeks.
Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at a special ‘Early Bird’ price between now and Thursday 4th May.
