Tashkent (Friday)
Singles – Semifinal: Irina-Camelia Begu def. (2) Urszula Radwanska 6-3 6-3
Irina-Camelia Begu was perhaps the best unseeded player here, so this isn’t a tremendous surprise, but it’s sad for Urszula Radwanska, who loses her chance to rise above #40.
Singles – Semifinal: (Q) Donna Vekic def. Eva Birnerova 6-1 3-6 6-1
Talk about a breakthrough tournament! This is, of course, the first final for Donna Vekic — and that’s in her first WTA event. She has increased her point total by more than 50%, and will rise from #183 to around #120. Eva Birnerova, last year’s finalist, will fall a dozen places or more.
Quebec City (Full Thursday results)
Singles – Second Round: Melanie Oudin def. (4) Aleksandra Wozniak walkover (right shoulder injury)
Aleksandra Wozniak hurt her shoulder preparing for this match; she was expected to have an MRI on Friday. A tough day for Canadians, as it turned out, and it costs Wozniak her Top Forty chance.
Singles – Second Round: Anna Tatishvili def. (7) Petra Martic 6-2 6-3
This is one of those non-upset upsets; Anna Tatishvili is the higher-ranked of these two based on this week’s rankings. Indeed, one more win would put her in the Top Fifty. And she will face a tired, unseeded opponent next.
Singles – Second Round: (8) Lucie Hradecka def. (WC) Eugenie Bouchard 7-6(7-2) 2-6 7-6(7-4)
Eugenie Bouchard is without question the most promising player Canada has right now, but it looks as if she needs to work on dealing with high-pressure situations. She kept on hanging on by her fingernails in the final set of this, and eventually she slipped. Lucie Hradecka ought to rise to around #55.
Singles – Second Round: Kirsten Flipkens def. Mirjana Lucic 6-7(2-7) 6-2 6-4
An impressive result by Kirsten Flipkens; having won an evening match against Dominika Cibulkova the night before she turned around to win a long day match against Mirjana Lucic. Let’s hope she has something left for her contest with Tatishvili.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Rosolska/Watson def. Bouchard/Falconi 7-6(7-4) 6-3
Hardly a surprise after Bouchard’s singles marathon.
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (3) Malek/Mladenovic def. Mueller/Muhammed 6-2 6-1
Just pronouncing the team names in this match must have been a tongue twister for the chair umpire, but fortunately the match went quickly….
Doubles – Quarterfinal: Coin/Pelletier def. Pegula/Sanchez 6-1 1-6 10-5 (Match TB)
Quebec City (Partial Friday results)
Singles – Quarterfinal: (3) Mona Barthel def. (6) Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3 6-4
Out goes last year’s champion Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, who is having a much more disappointing year this year. She will fall some twenty places below her current #62. Mona Barthel, the top player left in action this week, is up to probably #33.
Singles – Quarterfinal: Kirsten Flipkens def. Anna Tatishvili 6-2 3-0, retired (low back injury)
Anna Tatishvili loses her Top Fifty chance. Kirsten Flipkens will be hitting the Top Hundred as a result of this.
Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Rosolska/Watson def. Coin/Pelletier 6-4 6-2
And so the Quebecois are through in Quebec….
