Disappointed Czech Tomas Berdych says his big game was blown away in the howling winds which plagued the US Open semi-final which he says should never have been staged in such atrocious conditions.
But as a veteran of the Open and it’s unorthodox scheduling as determined by the US television gods, the Czech has just one answer to the debacle which he lost in four sets and four hours to Andy Murray: “no one cares,” he said of organizers.
Berdych left New York , which will stage a delayed men’s final for a fifth consecutive year due to weather and the lack of a covered showcourt, with some bitterness.
“Our sport deserves to have some rule or if the conditions are like that, then you don’t play,” said the man who defeated Roger Federer to reach his second Grand Slam semi-final. “To play such a big event as this one – especially missing the roof – it’s something to think about.”
But Berdych is resigned to the renegade major continuing to fly in the face of normal scheduling to placate the TV network paymasters.
“We are here in States where they really love show. Actually, this is not about show. This is just about somehow to try to deal with the conditions and then trying to put ball over the net. Sometimes that was even impossible, but that’s how it is.”
Berdych blamed the wind and his own habitual high toss for much of his loss in a match where he committed a massive 62 unforced errors. “Probably I made like 62 in all the matches before I get to the semi-finals, I don’t see any reason that my game would just crash.
“It’s sad, I thought I had a pretty good chance. The best word I can say is that the wind blew it away from me.”
