Courier Believes John Isner’s Early Loss Will Give Him Rest Before Davis Cup Tie

US captain Jim Courier says losing early at the US Open might be the best thing for the Davis Cup hopes of John Isner as the big man joins Sam Querrey in facing Spain on clay in next week’s semi-finals in Spain.

The tie at northern Gijon on the Atlantic coast will also feature the Bryan brothers in doubles., Spain are without long term knee injury victim Rafael Nadal but can count on plenty of backup from David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez.

“John losing (third round) in New York benefits his performance in Spain because he will get more rest and he needed it,” Courier said on Tuesday at the final Grand Slam of the season. “He’s over-scheduled himself, and he’ll learn from that.”

But the skipper added: “He’s been incredible in Davis Cup this year. He’s incredibly excited about Gijon, and he’ll get some rest for it now. He’s heading back to Tampa, and we’ll be heading over Saturday night and gearing up.”

Courier said that while Isner has had a poor year at the majors – he did not pass a third round – the Davis date is another story entirely. “He’s fired up about Davis Cup. When John’s fresh and focused, he’s beaten some substantial players this year.

“He’s going to have to be fresh and focused to stand a chance against Ferrer and Almagro. Those guys are playing some serious clay court tennis. They’ll be ready to defend their country’s colors.”
