U. S. Open

Singles – Fourth Round: (20) Roberta Vinci def. (2) Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1 6-4

Agnieszka Radwanska somehow seemed just a little off in this contest; maybe her shoulder was hurting again, or maybe it was Roberta Vinci’s rather different shots. In any case, she loses her chance for #1 (see the Feature. The contest is now down to Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova, with Azarenka having a huge advantage). Vinci is up to #15.

Singles – Fourth Round: (4) Serena Williams def. Andrea Hlavackova 6-0 6-0

This probably would have been a blowout even if Andrea Hlavackova had been healthy. When you add in the fact that Hlavackova was suffering hip problems, well, you get this score. Serena is still a mere #5 in safe points, but has the potential to climb; Andrea Hlavackova is around #60.

Singles – Fourth Round: (10) Sara Errani def. (6) Angelique Kerber 7-6(7-5) 6-3

A very nice win for Sara Errani on a hardcourt. She ends Angelique Kerber’s faint hopes of moving above #6. Errani herself is still only #8 in safe points, but one more win would move her past Li Na into the #7 spot.

In an intriguing development, the Errani’s quarterfinal will pit her against her doubles partner Roberta Vinci — and this just after they took the top doubles spots. An interesting psychological situation. And, yes, they are friends as well as partners — in fact, Vinci called Errani her best friend. But she was also happy about the result, because it guaranteed an Italian semifinalist.

Singles – Fourth Round: (12) Ana Ivanovic def. Tsvetana Pironkova 6-0 6-4

Ana Ivanovic should rise to #12 as a result of this; she is the last player with any real shot of joining the Top Ten this week. Tsvetana Pironkova will be around #45.

Doubles – Third Round: (4) Kirilenko/Petrova def. Williams/Williams 6-1 6-4

And here we thought the Williams Sisters would be a factor here! For Nadia Petrova, this makes it likely that she will keep the #7 ranking, and just about clinched her Top Ten spot. Maria Kirilenko hasn’t clinched the #10 ranking, but her odds look pretty good. Here is how we currently show the Top Ten:

1..(3) ERRANI ………….8120*

2..(4) VINCI …………. 8120*

3..(1) HUBER …………. 7955

3..(1) RAYMOND ……….. 7955

5..(5) HRADECKA ………..6270*

6..(6) HLAVACKOVA ………6190*

7..(7) PETROVA ……….. 5355*

8..(9) SREBOTNIK ……… 5270

9.(12) VESNINA ……….. 5050

10.(11) KIRILENKO ……… 5035*

Doubles – Third Round: (11) Goerges/Peschke def. (5) King/Shvedova 6-4 6-2

King/Shvedova will be taking a big fall; they were last year’s finalists. Vania King, #8 coming in, will fall to no better than #13 (two spots behind Peschke); Shvedova will slide from #10 to #15 or lower.

Doubles – Third Round: Lisicki/Peng def. (6) Makarova/Vesnina 6-2 3-6 6-4

In singles, Elena Vesnina beat Peng Shuai, so this was Peng’s chance for revenge. It took two hours, but she got it. That costs Elena Vesnina her chance to clinch a Top Ten spot; Ekaterina Makarova will remain below #15.

Doubles – Third Round: (8) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez def. (9) Kops-Jones/Spears 3-6 7-6(7-2) 7-5

The Spaniards seem unable to have an easy match, but at least they keep winning…Llagostera Vives has all but guaranteed her Top Fifteen spot; Martinez Sanchez looks likely although not yet quite guaranteed to stay Top Twenty.

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Huber/Mirnyi def. Llagostera Vives/Marrero 6-1 7-5

Mixed rankings would demote Huber/Mirnyi a lot, but they would still be ahead of the Spaniards.

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (7) Hradecka/Cermak def. (3) Vesnina/Paes 7-6(7-2) 7-5

And, once again, Vesnina/Paes fail to win a Slam. They’re the most consistent Mixed team out there, which is why they top our Mixed rankings, but they just don’t win the big matches.

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: (4) Peschke/Matkowski def. Mirza/Fleming 6-3 7-5

These two teams were exactly even in the mixed doubles rankings. Surely they could have managed a match tiebreak at least….

Mixed Doubles – Quarterfinal: Makarova/Soares def. Rodionova/Rojer 4-6 6-3 10-7 (Match TB)
