U. S. Open

Singles – Third Round: (2) N Djokovic def. (31) J Benneteau 6-3 6-2 6-2

Nothing like a blowout to start the day’s action…. Julien Benneteau will almost certainly retain the #35 ranking he came in with. And we knew all along that Novak Djokovic would keep the #2 ranking he came in with.

Singles – Third Round: (4) D Ferrer def. L Hewitt 7-6(11-9) 4-6 6-3 6-0

Who would have thought, a year ago, that Lleyton Hewitt could still do as well as he has done in the last few months? He could well end the year back in the Top Hundred. Which is still rather depressing, when you think about it….

Singles – Third Round: (7) J del Potro def. L Mayer 6-3 7-5 7-6(11-9)

Juan Martin del Potro blew several match points in this before finally coming through — rather surprising given the talent gap here. He leaves Leonardo Mayer a little above #60.

Singles – Third Round: (8) J Tipsarevic def. G Zemlja 6-4 6-3 7-5

Janko Tipsarevic keeps adding points — and keeps getting no reward for it, because he’s chasing Juan Martin del Potro, and del Potro is adding them too.

Singles – Third Round: (13) R Gasquet def. S Johnson 7-6(7-4) 6-2 6-3

This for practical purposes ought to clinch Richard Gasquet’s Top Fifteen spot.

Singles – Third Round: (18) S Wawrinka def. (14) A Dolgopolov 6-4 6-4 6-2

That will drop Alexandr Dolgopolov out of the Top Fifteen; the best he can hope for is to be #18. Who will replace him in the Top Fifteen? Right now, it’s Milos Raonic, but Stanislas Wawrinka also has a shot; he’s up to #17 in safe points.

Singles – Third Round: (20) A Roddick def. F Fognini 7-5 7-6(7-1) 4-6 6-4

Once again Andy Roddick staves off retirement — and improves his odds of retiring in the Top Twenty, although he needs one more win to clinch it. Fabio Fognini will be just below #55.

Doubles – Third Round: Knowle/Polasek def. (3) Lindstedt/Tecau 6-1 3-6 6-4

It looks as if it’s back to “can’t win the big ones” for Lindstedt/Tecau. They will likely stay #5/#6, but this means they won’t clinch yet.

Doubles – Third Round: (5) Paes/Stepanek def. Levine/Matosevic 6-1 6-3

One more win and Radek Stepanek will probably hit the Top Ten. As well as effectively clinching a London spot for Paes/Stepanek. We show the doubles Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) Mirnyi………….9260

1..(1) Nestor………….9260

3..(3) Bryan…………..8200

3..(3) Bryan…………..8200

5..(5) Lindstedt……….6330

5..(5) Tecau…………..6330

7..(9) Paes……………5695

8.(10) LopezM………….5040

9..(7) Fyrstenberg……..4815

10..(8) Matkowski……….4680

Doubles – Third Round: (9) Qureshi/Rojer def. Bogomolov/Klaasen 6-3 6-4

Qureshi now looks just about sure in practice to stay Top Fifteen; his partner Rojer is getting close.

Doubles – Third Round: Harrison/Harrison def. (14) Fleming/Hutchins 6-3 6-4

Ryan Harrison doesn’t have much of a doubles record — he came here at #88, with nine events. This hints that he really ought to be playing more….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (1) Huber/Mirnyi def. Stephens/R Ram walkover

Sloane Stephens had played a very long, very late singles match the night before. This was tough scheduling to say the least….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (3) Vesnina/Paes def. Spears/Lipsky 4-6 6-4 10-5 (Match TB)

Considering that they’re the best Mixed team in the world, Vesnina/Paes seem to be having a very hard time here. But they won on a day when walkovers were happening right and left….

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Llagostera Vives/Marrero def. (6) Hlavackova/Bhupathi walkover

What a day for walkovers! No word about what is wrong with Bhupathi (we assume it’s Bhupathi, since Andrea Hlavackova was fine in her women’s doubles match).

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: (7) Hradecka/Cermak def. Lepchenko/Young 2-6 6-4 10-7 (Match TB)

Quite a feast-or-famine day: Walkovers or match tiebreaks. At least the Vesnina/Paes had an excuse for their tough win, since they faced two pretty strong opponents. It’s hard to figure out what was Hradecka/Cermak’s problem; they didn’t face much.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Rodionova/Rojer def. (8) Jans-Ignacik/Fyrstenberg 7-6(6) 6-4

No big surprise here; mixed ranks would have left Jans-Ignacik/Fyrstenberg unseeded.

Mixed Doubles – Second Round: Mirza/Fleming def. Oudin/Sock 6-4 7-6(9-7)

There go our defending champions. Too bad for Oudin/Sock that they don’t use mixed rankings; under mixed, they would have been seeded, and so would have Mirza/Fleming, so this match couldn’t have happened until the quarterfinal.
