After a week of down time Serena Williams is fully charged and ready to take on the US Open once again, with the 30-year-old American keen to lift her first title at her home major since 2008, Williams lost the final a year ago to Australian Samantha Stosur and has had a few spats with chair umpires in recent editions.
She comes to New York with Wimbledon and Olympic titles, and a full dose of confidence. But there is no time to ponder who is the favourite going into the final major of the season. “In Wimbledon I wasn’t the favourite; I embraced that. Hopefully I can propel and do my best here,” said the No. 4 who lost in the Cincinnati quarter-finals last week to German Angelique Kerber.
“I took a couple of days off, I think that helped me to like get myself together mentally and get ready for the US Open, biggest tournament in the United States. I came to New York really early and relaxed and karaoked, and that was about it.”
Williams, owner of five 2012 trophies, insists that starting the major is nothing special to her. “I don’t feel any pressure or anything. I don’t put any pressure on myself. “If I win, that would be great. If I lose, I realise I’m going to go home and be devastated. But there’s always tomorrow.”
