Andy Murray Has A Tough Draw At The Open, But His Mom Thinks He Can Handle It

Gold medalist Andy Murray has been handed one of the toughest draws possible in his bid to finally add a Grand Slam title to his memorable Olympic achievement but nobody knows the Scot better than his mother Judy and she is convinced he is in the perfect frame of mind to finally win a major.

Thursday’s draw in New York was tough on Murray, who looks likely to have to beat huge-serving Milos Raonic, the explosive Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, world No 1 Roger Federer and defending champion Novak Djokovic to win the title.

But his mother insisted: “He will certainly go into Grand Slams with that belief that he can get over the final hurdle having done it once.

“A big burden has probably been lifted off him after getting the gold medal at the Olympics to prove to people that he could get through a big final against one of the best players in the world.”

Murray lost the 2008 US Open final to Federer and has subsequently lost two Australian Open finals to the Swiss and Novak Djokovic and this year’s Wimbledon . However he turned the tables on Federer within the space of a month and completely outplayed the world no.1 on the same Wimbledon Centre Court to win gold.

Judy Murray acknowledged home crowds carried her son at the Olympics. “I really do think that support helped him a lot to make him realize that the public was really behind him and then when we got into the Olympics and the crowd was very much for the British players and the British team – I think that really lifted him as well. So who knows if he will win [ Wimbledon ] next year, but he will certainly be out there doing his best.”
