Novak Djokovic will prepare for his US Open title defense in relative peace as he and his team set up camp in suburban New Jersey for the duration of the last Grand Slam of the season starting on Monday.

Team Djokovic is studiously avoiding the glitter and glitz of Manhattan hotels, preferring to absorb the extra travel distance to bask in solitude in the suburbs.

“We stay in New Jersey at a friend’s place, so we’re not spending a lot of time in the city,” said the world No. 2 who reached the Cincinnati final at the weekend., “At the majors you really try to save as much energy as possible in order to perform your best on the court. That’s the goal. That’s why we’re there.”

It’s not the first time that Djokovic has stayed at the unspecified venue and the system worked well enough last year as he won the title.

“New York offers a lot – basically everything you can do throughout the day, night, whatever you want to do. I mean, I like Broadway. I went last year with my girlfriend. We went to see Mamma Mia!. This year I might use the opportunity of having couple days off and just try to see another show.”

Djokovic called his extra commute in a tournament car with driver not a huge stress. “It’s just maybe ten minutes more than from the city. It’s quite convenient, because it’s peace and quiet. That’s what you need.

“There is a lot of things going on throughout US Open. It’s a major, a lot of people, and you want to have a place, a hideout where you can try to practice and be focused on tennis.”
