Novak Djokovic has quickly put aside a disheartening finals defeat in Cincinnati to Roger Federer, with the Serb now switching gears for his title defence at the US Open from next week.
Djokovic was crushed for the Masters 1000 title by the Swiss in straight sets as Federer won the event without losing his serve all week. Djokovic has already put the loss to the back of his mind.
“Maybe playing a couple weeks in a row, four weeks in a row, got me maybe mentally. Physically it didn’t. I felt okay on the court. We move on. There is New York in a few days, and I really need to perform my best there,” said the No. 2.
“I feel good on the court. The Cincinnati conditions were quite different from the Open. It’s a bit slower there, which I think goes in my favor a little bit more. . . .more suitable to my style of the game. I’m now going to have a preparation that I think is very necessary for me right now mentally and physically.”
Djokovic, who won his third title of 2012 this month in Toronto, said that his fortnight on hardcourts produced some solid results. “I did more than I expected after Olympic Games. I lost only one match in two weeks in two Masters 1000 events, which is great success.
“I’m actually feeling good about myself at this moment. I really look forward to New York.” But Djokovic won’t be naming himself as a trophy favorite. “I’ll leave this to somebody else. I just try to pay attention to preparing well.”
