Canadian Open
Singles – Second Round: Tamira Paszek def. (1) Victoria Azarenka 3-3, retired (knee)
This match had been halted by rain the day before, and Victoria Azarenka decided not to come back. That means her #1 ranking is under threat — if Agnieszka Radwanska can win the title here. This kept alive Paszek’s Top Forty hopes, but the third round will be what decides it. Assuming it ever stops raining….
Singles – Second Round: (6) Angelique Kerber def. Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-3
Ekaterina Makarova defended her points, but others added, so she will fall from #42 to no better than #44. That pretty well ends her U. S. Open seeding hopes.
Singles – Second Round: (7) Caroline Wozniacki def. (Q) Kiki Bertens 7-5 6-1
Caroline Wozniacki doesn’t have any chance of making it above #8 this week, but she doesn’t want to fall below that, either, because of the U. S. Open seeding. So this was an important win.
Singles – Third Round: (16) Lucie Safarova def. (4) Samantha Stosur 7-6(11-9) 7-6(7-5)
One more win and Lucie Safarova will be Top Twenty. But Samantha Stosur, who was defending finalist points, will see her point total fall a lot. There is a faint chance she will fall to #6. More to the point, she no longer has any chance of rising to #4 before the U. S. Open. So her seeding will be rather low as she attempts to defend her title.
Singles – Third Round: (5) Petra Kvitova def. (9) Marion Bartoli 6-1 6-1
Could Petra Kvitova finally be coming to life? This raised a real possibility that Marion Bartoli could fall out of the Top Ten; it will depend on how Li Na performs.
Doubles – Second Round: (3) Petrova/Srebotnik def. Chuang/Zhang 6-7(8-10) 6-4 11-9 (Match TB)
A decent start for Katarina Srebotnik in her post-Kveta Peschke career….
Doubles – Second Round: Rodionova/Voskoboeva def. (6) Kops-Jones/Spears 2-6 7-6(8-6) 10-2 (Match TB)
Doubles – Second Round: Lisicki/Peng def. Grandin/Uhlirova 7-5 6-4
Doubles – Second Round: Mattek-Sands/Mirza def. Cibulkova/Hantuchova 6-2 6-3
Doubles – Second Round: Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic def. Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova 7-5 6-7(8-10) 10-8 (Match TB)
Doubles – Quarterfinal: (1) Huber/Raymond def. Lisicki/Peng 6-5, retired (Lisicki: left abdominal injury)
