Andre Agassi, long-time rival former Davis Cup team-mate and contemporary student at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Bradenton led the praise for the appointment of new United States captain Jim Courier.
“Jim has the experience, integrity and focus needed to bring the U.S Davis Cup to new heights,” maintained Agassi. “I know first hand that a man with Jim’s credentials as a warrior and a champion will bring out the best in our players and our fans.”
Lucy S. Garvin, the United States Tennis Association’s Chairman of the Board and President, added: “Jim will continue to bring class and character to the role of U.S. Davis Cup captain along with an outstanding pedigree in Davis Cup competition.
“We will see that same fighting spirit every time the United States competes and a new generation of U.S. Davis Cup players will have an opportunity to become better competitors under his leadership.”
Jim Curley, the USTA’s Chief Professional Tournaments Officer, revealed: “We had several strong candidates who were interested in becoming U.S. Davis Cup Captain, all of whom would have been very capable in the role.
“In the end, Jim’s Davis Cup experience and wealth of knowledge as a former Grand Slam champion stood out. He is the ideal candidate to replace Patrick, the longest-tenured captain in U.S. Davis Cup history.”
