Canadian Open

Singles – First Round: Tamira Paszek def. Julia Goerges 6-2 6-1

Julia Goerges loses her shot at the Top Twenty. Tamira Paszek is a little below the Top Forty. (For some reason, there are a lot of players active between #40 and #45.)

Singles – First Round: Carla Suarez Navarro def. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 1-6 6-4 6-3

Carla Suarez Navarro is one of those just below the Top Forty. She needs about 200 more points to earn a U. S. Open seed. Which probably means she needs a semifinal here or a quarterfinal at Cincinnati.

Singles – First Round: Ekaterina Makarova def. (LL) Urszula Radwanska 6-4 6-2

Ekaterina Makarova defends her points and will probably stay just below the Top Forty, too. Urszula Radwanska will be a little above #50.

Singles – First Round: Chanelle Scheepers def. (WC) Stephanie Dubois 1-6 6-3 6-0

Add Chanelle Scheepers to the just-below-the-Top-Forty crowd. A very crowded place indeed.

Singles – First Round: Roberta Vinci def. Yanina Wickmayer 6-2 3-6 7-5

Roberta Vinci came in ranked one spot ahead of Yanina Wickmayer but with quarterfinal points to defend. That made this, in effect, a contest for a Top Thirty spot. Vinci is probably in; Wickmayer will not rise above #30 and may fall. It was a dramatic ending; Vinci won the last five games.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Sesil Karatantcheva def. Sorana Cirstea 6-0 6-0

Whatever was wrong with Sorana Cirstea, it’s a severe blow to her U. S. Open seeding hopes; she will remain near the bottom of the Top Forty — and with all those close-to-the-top-forty players chasing her. Sesil Karatantcheva finally has herself firmly back in the Top Hundred.

Singles – First Round: Simona Halep def. (Q) Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-4 6-3

This might be enough to keep Simona Halep Top Fifty, but we would guess she needs one more win.

Singles – First Round: (Q) Jana Cepelova def. Sofia Arvidsson 6-3 6-3

Jana Cepelova just keeps climbing. It doesn’t appear this will put her in the Top Hundred. Not quite. But one more win certainly would.

Doubles – First Round: Jans-Ignacik/Mladenovic def. (5) Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez 7-6(10-8) 6-3

After a strong start to their reunion, Llagostera Vives/Martinez Sanchez have now suffered two straight improbable losses.

Doubles – First Round: Dushevina/Tanasugarn def. Husarova/Peer 7-5 5-7 10-7 (Match TB)

A lot of experience in this match…. Tamarine Tanasugarn’s ranking is falling fast, but at least her stamina seems to be good.

Doubles – First Round: Grandin/Uhlirova def. Jurak/Marosi 6-7(4-7) 6-4 10-8 (Match TB)

Doubles – First Round: Rodionova/Voskoboeva def. Kudryavtseva/Minella 6-0 6-3

Doubles – First Round: Makarova/Savchuk def. Dekmeijere/Rosolska 3-6 6-1 10-8 (Match TB)

We can’t help but notice how, with the Olympics over, most of the teams here are of women who are not countrywomen….

Doubles – First Round: Pavlyuchenkova/Safarova def. Babos/Daniilidou 6-1 3-6 11-9 (Match TB)
