The London Olympic dream has died for Andrea Petkovic, with the unlucky German announcing that she will not be fit enough to play in the tennis event which begins a week from Saturday. “Really sorry to announce that I will not be competing at the Olympic Games,” she said on her Twitter feed. “I’m heartbroken and sad as can be but I’m just not ready yet.”

The No. 18 has had a season to forget, skipping the Australian Open and the next three months with a serious back injury and then coming back only to roll her ankle on clay in Stuttgart in April.

That problem was meant to be solved by the time the Games open, but time ran out for the former national No. 1 as her torn ligaments took longer to heal and her training since has not proved satisfactory.

Only this week, the No. 18 was pictured along with teammates at the venue where German Olympic athletes pick up their uniforms. The national team will now comprise Angelique Kerber, Sabine Lisicki and Julia Goerges with replacement Mona Barthell in the 64-strong women’s singles field.

The doubles team Goerges/Petkovic will be replaced by Goerges/Anna-Lena Groenefeld
