Roland Garros

Singles – Third Round: (2) Maria Sharapova def. (28) Peng Shuai 6-2 6-1

Maria Sharapova, The Clay Edition, continues to be impressive. She keeps alive her faint chances for #1 and leaves Peng Shuai right around #30.

Singles – Third Round: (4) Petra Kvitova def. Nina Bratchikova 6-2 4-6 6-1

Every step forward for Petra Kvitova seems to be matched by at least a half step back, but at least she is winning. She is still at #4, though.

Singles – Third Round: (7) Li Na def. Christina McHale 3-6 6-2 6-1

Amazingly, defending champion Li Na may stay Top Ten after all. This keeps her ahead of Vera Zvonareva. The only player still with a reasonable chance to catch her is Dominika Cibulkova. Christina McHale won’t quite make the Top Thirty.

Singles – Third Round: Varvara Lepchenko def. (14) Francesca Schiavone 3-6 6-3 8-6

Last year, defending her title, Francesca Schiavone didn’t look at all good in the final. This year, she found another way to look bad. This will cost her her Top 25 ranking. Varvara Lepchenko is just below the Top Fifty.

Singles – Third Round: Klara Zakopalova def. (22) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3 7-5

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova’s ongoing slump leaves her still below the Top Thirty. She is just barely above Klara Zakopalova, who is up to probably #35.

Singles – Third Round: (23) Kaia Kanepi def. (9) Caroline Wozniacki 6-1 6-7(3-7) 6-3

No doubt Caroline Wozniacki will be glad to see the end of this clay season. She should gain a spot or two, but there isn’t much evidence that she is turning this season around. Kaia Kanepi should be at least #18.

Singles – Third Round: (Q) Yaroslava Shvedova def. Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4 7-5

Talk about a huge chance lost by Carla Suarez Navarro! She’ll hit the Top Forty, but with very little to spare. She certainly had the chance to go higher.

Singles – Third Round: Arantxa Rus def. (25) Julia Goerges 7-6(7-5) 2-6 6-2

Julia Goerges wasn’t happy that they finished this match; she thought it was too dark. Perhaps understandable, given that final set score. She will be around #25.

Doubles – Second Round: (3) King/Shvedova def. Halep/Wozniak walkover (Halep: left knee injury)

Doubles – Third Round: (4) Errani/Vinci def. Bratchikova/Gallovits-Hall 6-4 6-2

Another step toward the Top Five. Even if Errani/Vinci don’t make it this week, it seems quite likely after Wimbledon.

Doubles – Third Round: (5) Hlavackova/Hradecka def. Dekmeijere/Tanasugarn 6-2 6-4

Doubles – Third Round: (6) Makarova/Vesnina def. Chan/Chan 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Third Round: (7) Kirilenko/Petrova def. (11) Medina Garrigues/Parra Santonja 7-5 7-6(7-4)

Doubles – Third Round: (12) Llagostera Vives/Martínez Sanchez def. Pennetta/Schiavone 6-3 2-6 6-2
